how do you get fleets to do a 180?

how do you get fleets to do a 180 (turn around) if the enemy smoke is spotted behind you? If i try anything they immediately pile up into a mass of ships going in the opposite direction i want them to and or ramming each other. the ramming occurs even if i leave the fleet alone, untouched.
