ObiQuiet Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 If you like the tacking, furling, close maneuvering and bow spray aspects of Naval Action, and you're not already aware of the Volvo Ocean Race, check it out. 65' boats, fore-aft rigged, racing round the track, and racing around the world. Modern sport, age of sail tactics and principles at work. This weekend's race in Sanya, China, was pretty good viewing. YouTube has both the 1.5h and 1.5min highlights posted a few hours ago: https://www.youtube.com/user/volvooceanracevideos/videos You can look at www.volvooceanrace.com too, as long as you don't mind spoilers. 2
Destraex Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Hey Ensign. Very interesting. Going to move it to the tavern though if that's ok.
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Yup, love this. I posted the Team Vestas Wind wreck in a thread about shallows, grounding, charts, etc. Thanks for bringing it up!
BrutishVulgarian Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I love the Volvo Ocean race. THIS GAME NEEDS RACING. Please, I'm begging. Maybe we could have wind shadow only in racing maps, to start? Pretty please. I'm watching it now live, live is a computer animation. Naval Action looks prettier.
ObiQuiet Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 Seems like http://www.virtualskipper.com/ would serve that need.
ObiQuiet Posted March 14, 2015 Author Posted March 14, 2015 The Auckland race is starting in a few minutes. Live on YouTube.
ObiQuiet Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 (edited) Very nice helicopter shot of the modern-built barquentine (square-rigged foremast only) Spirit of New Zealand. This link should take you straight to the scene at 45:53 if the embedded doesn't Edited March 20, 2015 by Lt. Obiquiet
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 The embed doesn't take you there, but fast forward to 44min, 35sec and you can see her. Beautiful, thank you sir!
ObiQuiet Posted March 20, 2015 Author Posted March 20, 2015 (edited) The embed doesn't take you there, but fast forward to 44min, 35sec and you can see her. Beautiful, thank you sir! Odd, it did when I first tested it. Anyway, I added direct link that works better. Thank you! While I'm at it, this shows what happens when a massive number of on-line players tries to sail around the world: Edited March 20, 2015 by Lt. Obiquiet
ObiQuiet Posted April 1, 2015 Author Posted April 1, 2015 Yesterday's rounding of Cape Horn (helicopter footage of sailboats off Cape Horn is at least rare, if not unique)
