I think that it is a good idea to allow players to gift items/ships to less fortunate members of the community?

Perhaps we can sell ships in game?

But primarily I am talking about the paid game content. Too often something big happens and some friends do not have

the cash or time which discourages them.

Lol. This sort of thing happened in war of the roses. It was possible in that game to buy gold for friends and this really helped for new mates just getting into the game when everybody else was at level 50. I am just suggesting here that I may buy one of the larger ships so i can carry out operations right away with a new player friend.

its a bit like buying a mate a beer. You buy them a better mast or something instead :)

most games only implement gifting very late in life like wotr and recently mech.

Although I definitely do not like the idea that buying something with real money could, in any way, provide a boost to gameplay (in other words, I would not like the scenario given as an example). I think that if stuff could be bought (cosmetic and vanity stuff only) than it would indeed be a nice idea to be able to buy gifts for fellow players.

Buying paint? Im sure theres a lot of clans out there that would like to get their ships the same color asap.

I would agree with Brigand. Pay for vanity items such as customized appearance in the form of custom sails, ship colours, flags, etc but not pay to win or for convenience. That being said, I have seen discussions regarding a player based economy which would lead me to believe that players will be able to produce and sell any commodities in the game...eventually. I would also think that transferring money and items between players isn't unrealistic. However I would rather see ships have an astronomical value which would be realistic for the time rather than having a ship sunk and just toddling down to the local merchant to buy a new man of war....There needs to be consequence to death rather than, so I have been told, the WOW model where you don't lose much from dying. In Eve if you have all the stuff you had collected over the last 2 years of playing jammed into a ship and said ship was destroyed all your stuff was gone as well.

i for one would hate to see this game become a pay to win game.. i have already paid my money .. i do not wish to pay more..

if the devs had said from the get go that this will eventually become a free to play game with in game payments i would have thought twice about buying it.

too many game these days are becoming p2w and not releasing as a full one payment game these days.

"payment model will be similar to Guild Wars 2." (link)

"We are going to sell copies and sell premium content (ships) in the store." (link)

So there is, at this moment, absolutely nothing that indicates 'free to play'.

Since we're told that if a ship sinks, you lose it, I'm curious as to how sinking premium ships work.

Will you be able to reclaim the ship ad infinitum?

Will it be re-purchasable for ingame currency?

Considering the yacht was valued at $20, and anything bigger than a Surprise can sink it in 1 well placed volley...

If you're going to have multiple revenue streams, Guns of Icarus has a nice take imo. All the purchased items are purely cosmetic, they don't give you any descernable advantage what so ever, and they're all fairly cheap. The Secret World takes the alternative approach of having you buy the game, pay for a subscription and spend £20 on each outfit.

Regardless of whether or not paid-for ships are better, If the ships are freely re-claimable (even with some kind of cooldown) that'll give you a significant advantage over people who have to re-earn a ship if theirs sinks. And if they're not reclaimable (lol), I would never take the risk.

In my opinion, this is a pretty underhanded model. I have played games where, and agree with, vanity items ONLY are purchased with real world money but if you are paying a premium price for a game then you shouldn't have to use real world money to buy "important" items in the game. As it is $40 for an alpha is pretty steep and I saw in another thread where an admin claimed they have the final game valued as high as $100...pfft...what game is $100? On top of that you are, in all liklihood, looking at a subscription fee as well. If you have to pay for ships and other useful in game items on top of that...well...you know where they can shove it.  :o

If I remember correctly CCP did quite a bit of market research to come up with the best model for Dust514 and they found that they would make more money offering free access to the game and just charging for premium content rather than selling the game and charging a subscription fee. Even when they did this model with Eve I beleive it was $15 for the game and roughly $10-$15/month for the subscription. I'm fine with paying for the game and paying for premium content as long as there isn't a subscription fee and I realize that unlike CCP, Game-Labs hasn't, to the best of my knowledge, had a successful online game for the last 10 years which would more readily allow them to give free access to the result of X years of development time.

For a discussion on payment models, I kindly refer you to the topic: What would you be willing to pay for Naval Action MMO?
