What if items / ships would not be lost when sunk ?

....also, if the game went like that (having less and less money after being sunk by larger ships), I would have ended up in fighting only in basic cutters, never being able to learn manual sailing for instance in a less forgiving ship…..but fortunately the game does not go that way...
