ElAurens Posted February 25, 2020 Posted February 25, 2020 So, I have been spending time trying to build Commodore Dewey's flagship, USS Olympia. To say that it has been a frustrating experience would be putting it mildly. There is no combination of hulls, towers, engines, etc, that will allow the building of a 344ft. cruiser with a full load weight of 6694 tons, that has all the armament that Olympia carried. In fact there is no way to even come close. It's either way too heavy, or way under gunned, with no middle ground. I won't even get into the fact that none of the available hulls come close to looking the part. I hope this can be rectified by the time we get to full release, as the pre-dreadnought era is my happy place. I love the aesthetics of the ships of that period, and have otherwise enjoyed the battles I have put together with these fine old ladies of the sea. These were the ships that put the US Navy firmly on the world stage, and it was an interesting time overall as the rapid changes in technology made for some elegant, and bizarre, (France I'm looking at you) solutions to the problem of building a navy in such a time of technological and political flux. 2
Fuems Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 I'm glad someone else mentioned this, because I actually wanted to attempt the exact same build. I've been in love with the Olympia since seeing her in Philadelphia back in 2010 - my poster from the Independence Seaport Museum is still hanging on the wall adjacent to me. In addition to Olympia, the U.S.'s Great White Fleet had several fascinating and unique vessels that could potentially make for very fun base hulls in UA:D. 1
The Vorlon Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Concur with this - the Olympia would be a nice model to work with, along with the Kearsarge class pre-dreadnought with the two story turrets 2
The Vorlon Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 There examples of this lack of design / build across the entire spectrum when talking about the pre-dreadnaught era and the years before World War One. I recently looked at building SMS Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, and recreating the Battle of Cornel. It is impossible to create the Scharnhorst class, and forget about the HMS Good Hope or Monmouth. 1
