Portugal was one of the first nations to sail these beatiful but dangerous oceans we dream to sail... Here I bring one of my favorite poems on the topic, by Fernando Pessoa, most of its beaty its lost on the translation, but whats is kept its still worth it!

          Portuguese Sea

''O salty sea, so much of whose salt

Is Portugal’s tears! All the mothers
Who had to weep for us to cross you!
All the sons who prayed in vain!
   All the brides-to-be who never
Married for you to be ours, O sea!

Was it worth doing? Everything’s worth doing
If the soul of the doer isn’t small.
Whoever would go beyond the Cape
   Must go beyond sorrow.
God placed danger and the abyss in the sea,
But he also made it heaven’s mirror.''

                                       -Fernando Pessoa

I am Portuguese and I can confirm this, Portugal has a lot of poetry, lyrics and texts about the discovering of Brasil, the path to India, among other discoveries.

Although Fernando Pessoa is a bit of a pain in the ass with all the made up characters such as Álvaro Campos, Ricardo Reis, Alberto Caeiro, etc. I have to study them for my first language subject. I just can't get the exams right when it's about Fernando Pessoa.

Oh well.

Indeed, and each character is totally different! Ricardo Reis and Alvaro Campos are opposites, yet they will be in the same test -.-

Why are you studying Fernando Pessoa? Are you Portuguese?
