Essah Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 The calibers currently represented in the game are denoted in full inches according to US/British imperial measurements, navies employing metric measurements used small variations of these calibers denoted in full inches, and even US/American ships sometimes had guns with the calibers of for example the british BL 13.5 inch Mk V gun. Germany employed 150mm instead of 152mm (and even 152mm is not exactly 6 inches) as well as 380mm instead of 381mm/15in) France employed 139mm etc etc. It would be cool to see some of these national variations in the game, even if the real difference is very small, it still adds flavor to the game and helps distinguish the different nations perhaps. for example maybe German ships get 150mm while Russian ships get 152mm, in place of the 6in gun option.

I like this idea for cases where mountings or the guns themselves were substantially different in performance, or where one country developed a system well before others. For example, the French adopted quad turrets of numerous calibers and purposes earlier and in larger numbers than basically any other country (as far as naval artillery is concerned), with Britain being the other primary power to adopt quads, and only in comparatively limited numbers to the French. I reckon that makes more difference for campaigns than the current system though.

Possibly it is not the moment now while the game is trying to reach its playable level, but certainly, if the game aims to be relatively historicaly accurate, the above idea must have a serious consideration. In some other post someone commented on having different guns quality for a given calibre that will obviously improve over time. This second aspect combined with the comment above by Essah will certainly improve the technical aspect of the game and I am pretty sure the expected player of a game like this will appreciate this kind of implementations. 3
ElAurens Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Some variation in smaller caliber secondary, and "anti torpedo boat" guns would be welcome as well, such as the 57mm guns used on USS Olympia. A friend of mine and I have been attempting to build Olympia, but the correct secondary rifles, and hull weights, are just not making this possible. The builder is just not happy with a cruiser with the size, and weaponry of the Olympia, all on a hull with a 6663 ton full combat displacement.
akd Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 The 2-inch guns are clearly meant to be 6pdr / 57mm equivalents.
Theresnobiscuits Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Nah, 2 inches is a lot closer to the 3 pounder / 47mm hotchkiss used as a anti torpedo boat gun. Would be good if you had a tech tree for mains and secondaries, so you can choose if your nation is going to go 12-14-16 inches on main armament or 12-13.5-15 inches..unless your French or Italian then it's just mad (12 inch then 13.4 inch then back to 13 inch then up to 15inch with an experimental 17.7 in main gun in the mix between the 13.4 and the 13....and that's just the French..
