Shipmate Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Will there be any U.S. Civil War Iron Clad ships, such as the MERRIMACK and MONITOR. Even the French had the GLOIRE and the British had the GLATTON and METEOR. However, I think Iron Clad ships would spoil the game. Please do NOT have Iron Clad ships in the game.
Richard Dryfus Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 There Probably wont be. Maybe "Iron" Steamers like the very very VERY early ones. Possibly like the Savannah?
Illusive Tabby Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 With a hard limit date of 1830, IIRC, it would be hard to find many examples of steam powered warships, letalone ironclad warships. And I think the devs have said no to them, anyways. Also, wiki claims the first ironclad warship was built 1859...which is a little out of the timeline.
admin Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Steamships or ironclads will not be implemented in the game ever. Maybe in the next game. 8
William the Drake Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Steamships or ironclads will not be implemented in the game ever. Maybe in the next game. Next game. Next game. Next game. Next game! A civil war era setting would be very interesting. I figure turrets on certain ironclads would work similar to the towers in game now. Also, just a side note: coming from PotBS and the devs of Portalus, it really is nice to see that, even though you are working incredibly hard and well on the current game, you still have aspirations for future renditions. The fact that you have your shite so well in order that you can conceive projects later down the line is absolutely fantastic...Portalus has issues implementing hot-fixes and patches... 1
Illusive Tabby Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 So I started reading on about the Ironclad warships, of what I know next to nothing about. My interest in naval ships spans roughly 1650 to, funnily enough, 1830, the "cutoff date" of NA...then skips to roughly 1930 to 1945. Everything inbetween I consider to be "dirty" ships. Not saying the ships are dirty, but that early steam powered....stuff..scares me because of how new it was. It was all rather experimental. And yet, it would be fun to sail HMS Warrior around and blast stuff with 110 pound guns.
B24LIBERATOR Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Steam power was hardly new in the Great War... I think ironclads would be (in my opinion, no offense to anybody) more fun than sailing ships, I would love to see their next game include them (or maybe a sequel to Naval Action).
Mirones Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 there will be a singleplayer game where you sail the bismarck from norway through the north atlantic to france. we had her on the 1st of april last year but they couldnt get the hood finished in time for that day a shame
Wetworth Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Early ironclad would be... boring. Slow, unresponsive, and they had troubles damaging each other. No thanks. I love the little Monitor, but I have to reason to want to sail her.
nebsif Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 ^ ! Age of sail is perfect, the ships are like works of art, even if you remove the decorations.. maybe I just have a fetish for wood though

My arguement against steam ships in general is the fact that having a propeller or a paddel means you do not need to hold the weather gage. Whoever is faster controlls the battle over whoever is more skilled a sailor.

What you are asking for would be another kind of game. There is nothing wrong with wanting that, but it wouldn't fit with an age-of-sail type game. This game seems to be about Revolutionary and Napoleonic war era sailing ships. That being said, I would love to play a game that focuses on just pre-dreadnought steamships. They have a lot of character. Perhaps play World of Warships, and just stick to the lower tiers of vessels?
Sir Madoc Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I hope they include sailing ships from 1600-1800. Steam ships is a big no no since this is supposed to be an "age of sail game".
B24LIBERATOR Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Well that's why I said "next game" and not Naval Action, that being said I don't know if there will be a next game so it's just a fun thread to comment on Then again this is Naval Action: Age of Sail, so maybe there will be a "Dawn of Steam" one

At least the "zombies" will probably also have guns as well. Think Terminator: Future war, without the time travel.
Rutger Van Hoorn Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I agree that steam ships should not be in the game in the form of ironclads. But I wouldn't mind seeing early paddle ships as in river and shore transports. Some missions showing early development (but not full-fledged implementation) of half-ways towards ironclads could be interesting. I can immediately imagine for example a mission where you have to escort some experimental Frankenstein oversize armored paddle boat, only to have it blow mid-mission, then the rest of the mission is to disable your ally ship that thinks you blew up the ship (you're forced to fight but are forced to render as little damage as possible and only disable)
