Meraun Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Hey! You stole my avatar! Ready the cannons!!! "Clear decks for action, we got them windward! " (i also did pick it myself) 1
Leviathan Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 I'm surprised it shows up anywhere really. I have the original on my computer that I made a few years ago. Anyway, back on topic I don't want to hijack your thread.
ParaBellum Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 The books a naval classic. And I seriously recommend the TV mini series, quite well done actually. 1
ObiQuiet Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 A whole new set of worlds is opening to you, my friend: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/703-age-of-sail-readers/?hl=readers 2
nebsif Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 btw is the book ok to read as newb in age of sail or ill have to google every 2nd word like spank the spanker on the sunboard uhtermast?
Aragorn Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 the books were quite enjoyable..the TV series was...ok...........and yes ther are a few naval terms that you might have to look up when reading them nebsif
Megiddo Posted January 26, 2015 Posted January 26, 2015 Yes, but I found others more interesting namely: Aubrey/Maturin series. http://www.goodreads.com/book/similar/3144740-mr-midshipman-hornblower I even like the Alexander Kent series better than Hornblower, but you really can't go wrong. Oh, the link Ensign Obiquiet gave is a great place to start!
Furfy Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Another good series is by Dewey Lambdin; much like Aubrey/Maturin but the main character, Alan Lewrie, is a bit of a rake
ulysse77 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Hornblower is good, but Aubrey/Maturin is soo much better, altough the parts he spent on land is a bit tedious, i guess it really reflect the whole career of a captain.
DukeFife Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I read the Hornblower series way, way back in my High school days. Many moons ago.
sallee Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 A couple of summers ago I read the whole lot in a row. Was very sorry when I came to the end!
CommodoreWesley Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 The real question here is who has not read Hortatio Hornblower?
PIerrick de Badas Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Aubray = Bolitho >>>Hornblower for my point of view
Cuthbert Collingwood Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Not a novel but a great read. I have a copy of Dudley Pope's 'The Black Ship'. It looks back at the mutiny on board the frigate HMS Hermoine in 1797, She was commanded by Captain Hugh Pigot. For me this is the worst case of mutiny in the Royal Navy's history and also a study in what can happen when a captain goes off the rails and the powers that be do not pick up on the fact.
jackplego Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I've read this series at least 4 or 5 times, I absolutely love it. The references are on point, the tactics are accurate, and let me say than Hornblower is one badass sob. Another good series in the genre is the master and commander books.
Darkholder Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I admittedly haven't read the books, but I do own and have watched the Ioan Gruffud BBC series.
ZMacGirthy Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I have read the entire Hornblower series as well as all of the Lucky Jack Aubrey/O'Brien books. Oh my but I do love those stories. It's such a tragedy that no one has taken up the challenge of continuing either series. I can't imagine a publisher would mind selling a few more books.
SCL Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I haven't read them yet but i plan too. Anything else people recommend to read?
Razor6A Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 The problem I have with Hornblower is that CS Forester wrote the first one as chronologically in the middle. I did a chronological read through of the series and the change in tone is really jarring. His later works, which are chronologically earlier, are the best ones.
Richard Plantagenet Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 The refreshing thing about the Captain Aubrey series is that for once the Americans are the bad guys...lol
Edmond Rooke Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The books a naval classic. And I seriously recommend the TV mini series, quite well done actually. The mini series is not to be missed!
Nelson Hornblower Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Rereading Horatio now! Love the books and tv mini-series!
