contact Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 Hi all, Having asked and received help on pc system required ( I have been playing UG on iMac) I have a system up and running 👍 Many thanks to you all for your help. I have just dipped my toe in the water. Spent a couple of hours. Started the tutorial. Decided to try a battle. Unfortunately server down for an hour for maintenance. No problem. It has wet my appetite. Sorry these are not meant to be lame puns. I’m sure you have heard them all ! Yes there is a lot to take in. I was aware. For me it makes it more enjoyable. In time I’m confident I will be able to hopefully do well 🤞. Just to say I am finding it brilliant and looking forward to many enjoyable hours. Best wishes to all. 7
contact Posted August 10, 2019 Author Posted August 10, 2019 Thank you. I’m sure I will have lots of questions. Some no doubt will seem straight forward. It certainly is a steep learning curve. But I was aware of this when started looking into the game. So that has not put me off. Cheers 🍻 2 hours ago, Wraith said: Welcome to the game and good luck finding your sea legs. The learning curve is incredibly steep but there's plenty to sink your teeth into along the way. Let us know if you need any help or have any questions, as there are many players in the game and outside it who are happy to help new players along. 3
contact Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 (edited) Thanks to you all. I’m pleased to advise I have been in action for the first time. I decided to use the tutorial first. I passed the gunnery part and decided to take my cutter out to learn to handle her. By chance (I assume). In the distance I saw two ships. I used my telescope but could not from the distance make out much detail. I decided to close in and see what was going on. I again used my telescope and could make out two ships of a reasonable size. I then saw yellow flashes from one and could also see it was French. As yet unable to see who it was firing out. As I moved closer I saw it was a ship of his majesty’s Royal Navy. Both ships were 2 deckers and I could see they were engaging. Rightly or wrongly (not sure if it’s ok to do so). I decided to help my fellow countryman even if I only had a cutter. It was proving difficult to position myself to fire without the risk of hitting my own countrymen. Great luck I had just done the gunnery tutorial. I fired a ranging shot but couldn’t see where it had gone due to the smoke from my gun. I decided to move in closer. But wanted to be able to attack the French stern. I wasn’t keen on receiving a broadside ! I had now caught the attention of the Frenchman as I received some damage. Hopefully this would help my countryman. I closed and managed to fire at the stern. Despite the smoke I could see I was causing some damage. I was at least starting to help cause the Frenchman problems. With the 2 to 1 odds even if I only had a cutter. The battle went on for sometime. I was alarmed to discover how long it took me to reload ! A sharp learning curve. I spent a lot of time manoeuvring and firing the occasional broadside. Thankfully the British captain seemed to know his trade. The Frenchman started to suffer serious damage and I felt able to move in closer. Another broadside by the British captain and the Frenchman started to sit lower in the sea. The engagement was won. The British ship sailed off. I decided I needed target practice. So I stayed until the Frenchman sunk. I then sailed away feeling rather smug. Also having learned some lessons at the sharp end. What a great game ! Can’t wait till I know what I am doing 🤔. Cheers all 🍻 Edited August 11, 2019 by contact Error 7

You can set the telescope focal, enlarging or reducing the angle, using the mouse roll, both in open world and in battle instance. Good luck, have fair winds and have fun! 1

Good luck, have fair winds and have fun! Thank you. I have been able to have a few decent sessions this week. I attempted a couple of combat missions with mixed fortune. Well that’s how I’m looking at it ! When I reached the cross swords marker I found I was up against 2 pirate vessels with 2 gun decks. I exchanged fire a few times. During which I lost my rudder. I knew how to steer using the sails so I decided to make a run for it. Which was successful. I even picked up XP points. Second effort was against just 1 pirate ship with 2 gun decks. Same happened. I lost my rudder. So managed to escape and again gained XP points. A tactic I may well use again ! However, I must learn to protect my stern better ☺️. But enjoying it. I don’t necessarily expect to win early exchanges but the experience I am gaining is proving useful. Had some conversations when on line playing. Some real characters around. I would also recommend trying some of the tutorial exams. The second to last one will give you some rewards. Check the forum and on You Tube for videos on how to pass the final exam as well. 1

Hi, Brilliant. Many thanks 👍 I have so far tried 2 of the tutorials. The gunnery which I passed and then sailing. But will have to try again as I did get confused when having to steer with sails with the wind on my stern but from memory had to go backwards. Many thanks. Will look to try the others. Pass the final exam in due course. Definitely will check the videos. Edited August 14, 2019 by contact Error 1
contact Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 (edited) I have reached the level of Commodore. Haven’t I done well. NO ! I have worked my way up by trading. Mission kills. PVP ect. Now when I see my title when playing NA I have felt rather smug with myself. Until today ! Today I fought (I use the term loosely ) in my first PVP with a number of players on each side. For the most part I found myself chained ! And was mainly a spectator ! Thankfully, no harm came to my allies. But it brought it home to me that my rank means nothing. I may now be able to crew a ship unto 700 men. But I still have a lot to learn in sailing and taking part in larger engagements, especially with larger ships. I like to think I learn by my mistakes. Today is such a day. My allies were very kind to me. But it was a wake up call to myself. Rank means nothing. I now intend to spend far more time in combat. Learning as I do so. I want to take part in more larger engagements. Though I do also enjoy the single ones. This game has a sharpe learning curve. Which I was reminded of today. Though I am really annoyed with myself. I will with time improve. I hope ! It gives you good days and bad. I love it 😍. So any other noobs that are, or will be go through this period. Keep going. Others have no doubt been there too and got through it. So can we. Cheers all 🍻 Edited December 6, 2019 by contact Error 1

Well done on hanging in there. Your attitude is very positive. As you begin to get involved in larger group fights, you will find that getting in each other's way is one of the worst sins! 1

Looking back afterwards. I still enjoyed it. It is a great game. And I have always hated not winning. Be it games or sport. Regards 2

But well done scaling the cliff that's the learning curve.. 1000's of hours in and I still learn something new each time I fight, which makes wading through all of the other sharp corners of the game mostly worth it. Thanks. I know a highly respected clan officer. He still got ganked. I do agree with you. Sail first. Shoot second. Cheers 1
contact Posted December 6, 2019 Author Posted December 6, 2019 I just want other noobs to understand this is all part of the game. They need to stick with it and gradually they will start to achieve. Though there is always a player better than you. Also, No disrespect to those of all ranks who are worthy of their rank. 2
Angus MacDuff Posted December 6, 2019 Posted December 6, 2019 Don't worry about rank. As you said, it means nothing. There are plenty who have max rank and can't fight. Others with low rank and are surprisingly good (probably alts). Skill comes from experience. I suggest you spend as much time as you can in the PZ with crappy ships (with or without friends). Especially if you can do the Solo zone and find takers. 2

I would guess your post reminded many of us of our own experiences. I believe my first port battle I was dead within 5 minutes, a victim of being overwhelmed by all that was going on and literally sailing by myself into the middle of the enemy. I’ve lost plenty of ships by being boarded by an AI because I wasn’t paying attention to enough details. As I believe @Wraith said, “sail first, shoot later”. You’ll get to that point where you’re thinking and planning ahead on the wind, sail position, ship position and angle, and even using heel (your own and the enemies) to your advantage. Fair sails and Good Luck. O7 2
