Historical facts :

  • The Majorcan shipbuilders built LRQ to take onboard 300 crew and 50-60 days of food
  • Crew on LRQ (in 1752, in peace time) : 245 (according to A. Demerliac, Nomenclature des Navires français)
  • In 1753, Chevalier de Fabry, Captain of LRQ, spoke in favour of 200 crew in time peace and 280-300 in war time. In his letter to the French Navy, he forecasts one only objection from the Admiralty : the cost of the crew wages...
  • Crew lists of LRQ in peace time show 187-245 crew.
  • One crew list of LRQ in 1759, thus in war time, shows 228 crew. But other crew lists exist and would show other crew numbers, especially in war time.
  • According to crew lists, crew seemed more numerous on xebecs of the French Navy than on the corvettes and frigates that carried the same armament.

Thus, 250 crew for in-game LRQ seems fair.

1. When I called out people for nitpicking, I referred to "no name", Hethwill and other comments that did made "corrections" without historical backing, which were proven wrong. Show me the BOW GUN PORTS "no name" claimed to have found on the images linked?

2. You IGNORE my COUNTER ARGUMENT when speaking about "Historical Crew Sizes":

- Le Requin is NOT an Ocean going ship, it was designed by Majorcan shipbuilders for Coastal Operations in the Mediterranean Sea. Should it be a "shallow only" ship in Naval Action? Should it sink whenever it counters a deep-water storm?

- Crew correlates to MISSION more than ship size. This explains why a SMALLER vessel, that is 10 ft 5 ft narrower than other frigates of comparable rate, can have more Crew.

You are comparing the Le Requin that hunted the coasts of the Mediterranean, with ships that were designed to Cross Oceans, and support fleets.

Their reduced crew relative to ship size is explained very simply by FOOD, WATER and JOURNEY LENGTH. My main argument is GAME BALANCE related, Historical references are just an inspiration to keep the Balancing as historical as possible. Clearly a Le Requin can sometimes only carry 187 or 228 crew regardless of what "seems fair" to you personally. If reducing crew size is the way the ship is balanced, then clearly those balance changes would not be too far away from historical precedent based on your own data! A Xebec operating in the Caribbean, sailing in deep waters, and keeping comparative cargo capacity to other ships, can have less crew then one operating in Mediterranean shallows, and returning to port multiple times a week. Clearly other ships operating in similar conditions could increase their crew sizes and hire more boarders - if no long range journeys are planned.

3. Proper Corrections with historical references resulted in my posts being edited and fixed. Why do you keep addressing those old corrections and distracting from the rest of the post? Are you here to discuss the TOPIC or to distract from it?

4. L'Hermione was balanced without Port Bonuses. L'Hermione with Sailing 2-4 is too fast (and heavily armed) compared to ships of similar BR/size. This is a thread about Port Bonuses + DLC ships, not the balance of the ships in prior patches.

Fixed the width difference from 10ft to 5ft, should have just used volume or hammock space, really.

@Tenet

 Some more facts

1) Optimal crew of LRQ in war time : 300 (according to her captain).

2) The surface of the Mediterranean = surface of the Caribbean Sea (more or less)

Cerberus (you mentioned in OP)

  • length = 118' (imperial ft)
  • breadth = 33'

Pandora

  • length = 115'
  • breadth = 32'

LRQ

  • length = 123'
  • breadth = 28'

This is my last post in that thread.

Please, take the time to look for and use reliable sources.

Have fun in game. 😀

The requin is fine, its been so nerfed into the ground at this point (Rightfully so). The non ocean going vessel argument is such a poor one we have a freaking lake boat the niagra in game. The requin is easy to kill by anyone who knows to just sit outside carro range and shoot it with cannon and it's not like it can close the distance as it cant sail with the wind. All the dlc ships in game are balanced fine and no where near the top of their class with the exception of the requin.

The Le Requin is statistically superior to all other top BR 6th rates

The worst sailing profile going downwind of all ships in the GAME and you call that ship the Requin to be the superior 6th rate?

And by the way were other Xebecs made by the spanish in the carribbeans so ... and please stop wiht that bullshit ocean going. The vikings were crossing the oceans 800 years before in smaller ships. It is nonsense your arguments.

There is only one thing i agree with you. The replacement of those 32pd carronades for 24pd. Nothing more.

Well, one ship has to be the worst downwind. It´s only fair to chose that one which performs best in other situations. I get the impression you only want to have a vessel superior to all the others. Sail a square rigger if you want to be fast dowind.

This game is not pay to win, DLC ships are worse than built counterparts across the board. If you disagree, 1v1 me in your dlc trash.

1. Opinions are irrelevant, only the arguments that support them matter.

2. Your request for a 1v1 Duel is dumb. Anecdotal evidence is irrelevant. One duel is an insufficient sample size for statistics. Not an argument.

Take some time to think of an actual argument, then come back and we will "duel".

Anyone can get these ships for combat medals now in game through the admiralty. If you want them all the time you will either work hard for them... or buy them... but I like the Surprise better than the L'Hermione, that's me though, and I like it because its a better pirate ship in many regards. The Hercules and Surprise fill the same roll for me. But I understand that we all play a different style of game... so, we aren't all looking for fast light frigates... L'Hermione is just a tad slower than I like for solo play... but I can dow ell in it... and have done well in it. The Hercules and Surprise just work better for me … the Requin is a good trader hunter, I would not class her as a warship... she is a raiders and against ships with similar crew count will nearly always struggle against an adept player.

Three cheers for the frigates and their gallant Captains!
