No, but giving them nothing and expecting this game to survive is not only a bad idea. but a bad business model. The game needs players, and in order to get those players, it has to give some basic information... maybe... how to craft and level crafting? since patch there is nothing from either the devs or online about how to level. Tbh, I still dont even know WHAT I can do to get xp, I know ships are... some? and cannons are none? I build both and still sitting at level 0, so it could realistically be that US players don't get any XP at all. In the end, nothing=no players, and giving some sort of info keeps players interested, engaged and playing

Well, perhaps we just have different gaming methods?....

I've always preferred exploring the mechanics and "discovering" what does what instead of trying to power game once I know the mechanics.....

On a side note...  you ARE building XP by building ships...  If you hover over the little red emblem that shows crafting level, you will see what your acquired XP towards level 1 is....

The help channel in game is very helpful, just as an FYI

I built 6-8 mercury's and moved up to level one, so it's not that hard at the start.  Now level 2 and building heavy 5ths.

here is an idea: give new players a "response fleet" button. Teach them about it, let them use it 10x. That will give sealclubbers the thought that "this guy may spawn 10x santismas on me, maybe I should let him learn the game in peace. Once you hit captain, they are no longer available.

Btw. how do I abandon a fleet ship in OW nowadays?

We don't.

Not? When was that changed?

I always tell new guys struggling to go practice on the PvE server for a week or 2.

Not meant as an elite-ist insult, more as a sensible way to go forward if they having big issues in game.

At least on PvE they can learn to sail and experiment without unwanted interference.

Pffff... can't remember exactly but was way before game full release, but was as surprised as you are but I like the commitment. Player choice to fleet or not to with the benefits and problems it carries.

Do you see them come back to the war server? I'm interested in what people would do next, not dissing your advice.

Actually yes. Three newcomers my gaming group helped to get in the game did diss War server and went to Peace, before launch, like 4 months or so ( they got the game in a previous sale ). After full release they are back on War and sticking to it. Guess they did good and learning the overall picture of map/economy/combat in there.

Is a meager count, but exceptions prove rules.

Yes have seen a few go to PvE and come back few weeks later.

Some ofc don't and maybe stay there or could have come back under different name or quit altogether. Only devs with connection info could say for sure though.

It is so retarded to see Veterans with thousands of hours giving advice to new players who does not even know about this forum, they even do not know what that green C on their compass is...

To sum it up, what's happening is inability of the developers, and the lack of understanding of their own game. Result is, game is driving hundreds of players away just at the start, "who would very much love this game after some point"

Maybe instead of...

"Green C is this and that and whatnot"

... the veteran could just say...

"hover you mouse over it. You can do that over most game elements for some explanation, including of what that green C is. If after that you have question, just shoot."

Major difference.

Do all people these days need to be spoon fed EVERYTHING?  What a scary thought.

A lot of things in this game aren't intuitive. Like ROE for example. Some things need explaining.

By getting sunk a million times in cheap ships....  like rest of us.....

Can we dispense with the myth that EVERY new player wants to be coddled?....

Dude when was the last time you got spanked and ganked while sailing a Navy Brig with medium cannons by a Requin? Doesn't feel good. I do think it should be allowed to happen, but being engaged in PvP is still engaging in PvP and needs to be rewarded somehow. Damage done giving Combat marks is one option.

Well theres ur problem right there...  a navy brig can easily escape from a Requin...  its called LEARNING.

But I can agree that giving rewards for damage would be good.

I agree with you completely, that is an important thing to learn and many lessons are learned from being sunk.  I think I'm more worried about new players getting discouraged. I would like to see consolation prizes for getting beat up. Maybe something like double reals/xp for fights an hour after being sunk or a small chance of getting a chest from the Admiralty when you die . Something to soften the blow.

Just trying to see where and how the line in the sand is drawn from your own personal perspective. Not implying anything.

I really dislike killing traders just for mission counters. I would "kill" to return to no reward by killing trader, but rather the capture of the resources themselves ( patch 10 ); but we are way way way beyond that now, so no spilled milk on my part.

Warships though are warships. Get ready for War or not at all.

Combat marks are there to encourage seal clubbing. It rewards you with better clubs while making seals even weaker.

You can reward PvP on WoW, where you don't loose your items. If you reward winner further in case you have free loot and loose your items, guess what will happen?

We are going slowly back to magical 500 players at peak time.

New players can't learn the game while everything is against them. They are here to be farmed by cool guys. Developers can't stand weaklings...

[NAVY] still recruit new players and help them to learn the game. This is the only way I see it happens, unless you are mad, patient and stubborn.

And winning needs to feel more like ... ?

Winning.

When I can earn more doubloons and reals in a trader lynx than in a warship, somethings wrong.

You won't earn any XP in a tlynx though. Remember combat marks? We need trade marks
