Crankey Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 Just choose one, Perhaps "B-52 Ace Pilot" might not be appropriate but afaik there are no restrictions for testing at least. My character name is Captain Jebediah Crankenveldingspall, However as my old teutonic family name is often difficult to pronounce and a devil to write out neat in a heavy sea, most know me simply as Captain Crankey in game. 1

I know that a lot of the YouTube and Bloggers will want to keep to their channel names but for the rest of us, it is nice to know we can make something up... although that was always the hardest part of any MMO. You would have great ideas for a name for your character but the moment you are faced with the "Sorry, that name is taken." message and a blank box, your brain just freezes. 1
admin Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 You pick the name on your first launch of the game. Current naming is temporary and will be changed in the future.
Seaman Stains Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 My friend had an "in game name" in mind, but was unable to choose it in Naval Action, as he said it forced him to use his Steam account name. I also have a Steam account name, but was able to choose this name (which, believe it or not, comes from the children's tv cartoon "Captain Pugwash"). Can my friend select his Naval Action In Game Name that is different from his Steam account name? If he has already launched his game (as mentioned by Admin), can he alter it now, or only "in the future"?

I've tried changing my steam name but it remains the same in game anyway.

So for now, he's stuck with his choice until they have time to work on that feature.

All your Steam Friends will see the change but at least NA will pick it up too. To change your Steam Community persona, click on the "Friends" menu along the top of the Steam interface and select "Change Profile Name..."

NA would remember the Persona at time of install? Yes. NA doesn't receive the name fresh from Steam every time you launch, nor is it stored locally on your machine. It's set in their database servers, likely associated with your core Steam ID or Token, and that's the last time that value is updated. There is no current mechanism for that value to be updated again. It's nothing to get upset about though - when they start working on the character creation code, you'll be able to update your name then to something you're happier with. I know it's a pain for now, but such is life in Alpha.
Elisabeth Vissersch Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I used my own name with a random Dutch surname, I doubt people will pick a name like this, especially because its a female name (not sure how many females play/will play this game). I always have a hard time deciding, sometimes I end up taking about 30 minutes until I'm satisfied with the one I picked. 1

Hey, as you migt have noticed, the post above are from Febraury this year and a lot has changed. We are not in the Sea Trials (arena mode for combat testing) anymore but are sailing on the Open World test map. Each account may have multiple (up to 3?) characters, each one can be given a name of your choice when it first is created. Obviously many chose their Steam/forum name for the primary character. 1
