Me n my lad (Able Seaman Tanlash) bought this (alpha) game just before Christmas after catching a streamer show it off.

Just wanna say :

1) Great work so far, just getting into the forums to learn the ropes, but general graphics, smoothness, sound, really good for so early on

2) Have been very happy with the community (in Lobby and in Game) as to how helpful/fun they are

3) Looking forward to watch this little diamond grow, its already great fun, new damage model soon....and so much more potential.

We play at Australian times, so other than the weekends where we can overlap with Europe and the US some we don't tend to get into to many big fights, but had a couple of games last night with 15-20 ships....went for almost the full timer in both cases...and what fun we had.

Now...to learn how to....well everything....

Thankee, had a looksee on new player guides (searches etc) and the likes, couple of questions that would be nice to know the answer to (point to resources if they exist)

1) What are battle sails and why would I 'hoist them' (and I assume B puts them away and re-hoists my ?? holiday sails ??).

2) When using a repair kit, is it quicker if I am in survival mode or does it do more repairs ? or neither.

3) When stuck upwind (like a noob) and basically still or going backwards in the water, WITHOUT manual sail management, what is the best way to 'get the wind back', my current clumsy tactic is to hold the rudder one way (seems to be almost opposite lock) until I get about a 5 degree turn, then flip it so I am now heading towards the wind direction....is there a better way...or do I need to learn manual sails.

4) What is the difference between normal/long cannons (long fire further yes) do they do the same/more damage ? close up etc ? do they take any longer to load ?

5) If I have (on my suprise) 2 decks and put 9 pounders on one deck and 12 on the others (be they long or not) can I assume they will have different ranges ? obviously different damage ? and the same load time ?

Hi Jeheil :)

1. Battle Sails provide a good balance of speed and maneuverability and saving your sails from being damaged too much by chain shot. B prompts battle sail setup, w and s will go one step up (half) or down (slow) from that setting.

2. I dont know. However you'll mostly want to go into survival to pump faster and to fix leaks faster.

3. You need to learn manual sails. Especially in bigger ships it will give you some pretty big advantages (e.g. turn radius). Its not rocket science either. Once you wrap your head around it, its pretty straightforward.

4. Not 100% sure how its been coded except for the long fire further part :)

5. Different range, damage, load time etc. You can lock and unlock different decks from firing with F1-F4 keys. Using that you can aim and fire long broadsides with different gun types seperately.

Ok I hope this makes up for our brutally unbalanced "duel" :)

1) The battle sails main advantage is that you reduce your heel. If you are on full sails and cannot hit your target downwind (leewards) you must reduce your canvas and ideally brace your yards parallel to the wind to lessen the preassure wich makes you heel over.

2) Yes it is faster on survival but practically speaken the difference is negligible.

3) dont look at the kind of angle you have to the wind. Check your speeds. When going backwards you have to reverse the rudder. manual sails or auto is the same.

4) long guns have 200 meters more range and better penetration. Downside here is longer reload and less damage output. Id take long guns over normal ones all day. If you can not penetrate you do no damage. Its my philosophy.

5) normal guns like 9pd and bigger all have the same base (max) range. 1200meters. Despite the height difference of the two decks you will have the same range with both gundecks. The red line does not show you the elevation your shooting at but a relative range you aim for.

The reload on different sized guns is always different. Bigger gun means more weight means longer reload times. (and more guns to handle in RL)

Regarding No3.

So lets have a basic look at it.

The arrow as you know points in the direction of the wind. if your sails were in a straight line or parrellel with this wind arrow then you will not go anywhere, if they are at an angle to the wind then they will gain headway.

How can we use this to our advantage?

well, if we want to turn to port and the wind is blowing from left to right <---- we could angle our aft sails parrellel with the wind and just use our fwd sails to push the front end around.

If the wind is blowing the same way but we are wanting to turn to stbd then put our fwd sails parrellel to the wind and this will blow our stern around.

Best way to try this is right at the start of a PVE match, the wind is behind you so if you want to go to stbd straight of the bat hold down E and Z and with no rudder you will see yourself turning to stbd.

When you are facing the wind use the "wrong end of the sail" to push you backwards, ie use the fwd sails to push your bow round. (you will be going backwards look at your speed so reverse your rudder angle). when you are a few deg round you can then use your sails as you would normally, or as above.

sorry if this isnt as straight forward an explination as i would like but the servers are going down for maintenance so i cant get pictures to show you.

Welcome Jeheil (another Aussie!)

You should look at some YouTube vids when you're in down time. RAMJB has some great vids showing how to tack a square rigger, you will learn a lot watching this one.

The other questions you had have been adequately answered, no real need to go into those further.

Point#2: Totally Agree. Great Community so far! :)

Thanks all, much appreciated, I spent some time last night in PvE, have watched some 'more' RAMJB...think it was one of his video's that got me into NA in the first place :).

I will spend some more time in PvE and get my manual sails working better, I have the core now...I can turn in less than one ocean now...still need to suss the tacking out and getting out of an unintended caught against the wind situation...I know what I have to do...just need to do it better.

I have a terrible habit (formed from other games) of 'holding' a key down (eg holding W to move) rather than 'tapping' them in increments....think I need to put spikes on my keys or something to make me more of a tapper....just so used tot he WASD keys as hold to 'do'. That will take some mental work.

Anyway, had another handful of fun games last night, weekends are best for us Aussies though...as our 'peak time' (say 7pm-10pm) in the evenings rarely sees more than 30-40 folks on. So you end up in a Snow/Suprise against a small floating continent.

Really looking forward to this one slowly adding more and more content (the new Damage 4.0 looks very interesting) and can't wait for the other core functions to evolve (but I will wait...and am happy they take as long as it takes....I work in IT industry so I know the outcome of boxing deadlines).

Anyhoo...thanks all...and see you in the blue.
