Patch 31: Port investments, new hostility and preparation for release

Surely there is a stacking limit. Isn't 20% max for thickness?

So Oak-Oak built could get +10% thickness from port bonus (and even a speed bonus)  and another 6% thickness with Navy Planking + standart oak-oak HP bonus. The thickness difference would now be a much more bearable 4%.

Still, a 20% thickness max is A LOT compared to a stock ship.

30% is max thickness iirc.

This is madness.

@admin, how do we determine which port to take?  Is there any indication of their value when hovering a mouse over the port or does a player need to sail into each port and determine it's worth?

I am now a player only on the PEACE server due to changed gameplay forcing me to join a clan on the war server to survive and losing way too many ships to ganking. The peace server recaptured some of the fun the war server used to be before the drastic changes that befell it. So I went on the PEACE server quickly this morning before I went to work and had the new patch being installed. I check out the map and seems like most, if not all ports are owned by one nation or the other except of course free ports. One of my ports before patch is Islamorada, I had an oak farm and a coal mine there. The oak farm no longer works because oak is no longer produced in Islamorada! Coal still is produced there so my coal mine still seems to be active. However, the port is no longer neutral, its pirate.  I also found my outpost in St. Mary's in now Spanish. I have lost my tobacco farm and iron mine there since the port no longer produces them.

-Are my outposts in these two ports still valid? EDIT: Apparently so.

-Can I still produce coal in Islamorada or produce anything in a port owned by another nation? We could not before. If this is still the case, we are now very restricted in where we can build and trade. This will have a very detrimental effect on gameplay in the peace server. EDIT: Again, apparently so.

-Can I bring a warship into the port now? Again, could not before. EDIT: Still not sure.

Also, am I being compensated for the loss of my oak, tobacco, and iron buildings; would have been nice considering the time and money I've invested. Not to mention the potential  rework/rethink I have to do now in my trading routes, etc. because of this change. EDIT: Apparently not...

It does not cap at 20%, if it did you would gain no benefit on a Lo/Wo ship from Naval Structure (which is percentage based compared to cartagena/naval planking)

i believe the cap for most things is at 30%, which will still make Teak/White and Live/White the desired builds. As far as comparison to stock ships, nobody uses stock ships in any competitive manner, even SALTY back in ye olden tymes only used them as fireships and gank boarders.
Now, If the devs  confirm that there is a +10% thickness trim which can be added through this investment system (I think this is probably an error in the original post and refers instead to the armor HP of Very Sturdy) this will have the problem of greatly exacerbating the growing divide between small clans/casuals/solo players and big clans.

small clans, casuals, and solo players will still be stuck sailing Oak/Oak ships with no or random trim (+0% Thickness), and large clans who can control access to rare woods and who can afford these investments will be sailing Teak/White oak/thickness trim (+20% thickness) before taking into account mods.
this is not a good situation, woods simply matter too much in the creation of a usable hull, and they are far too inaccessible for a large portion of the community. this crafting system will make it worse not better.

Well done on making the map imbalanced...... Slow clap

Welcome to the Russian zerg and Russian Cancer.

By making nations stick to a certain area you forgot one VERY BIG mistake. THE NON CAPITAL NATIONS........ They can spread like hello kittying Cancer.

Same goes for the other Non-capital nations

I cant get online yet since im still at Work. But from what im Reading this Patch could become a Huge let down for The Peaceful Server. I was really looking Forward for the Changes and was looking Forward to Work together with my prussian Clan. But If you cant use the shipcrafting bonuses, Upgrade efficiency gets reduced and we dont have neutral Ports... This might get hard and force people to Change Nation. Not Like its already hard enough for No Capital Nations on PVE without alt Accounts.

ehm, every nation can spread from every Freeport, just like Russia. The Brits are already gaining Hostility on Nassau, wich is way of their Capital. Read before scream..

The issue is mostly about RVR, where a full fleet of Lo-Wo warships will wreck a full oak-oak fleet without a sweat.

I don't agree.  its across the board.  OW raiders need speed and strength.  0.25 knots make a huge difference to a raider and getting the most hull strength for your ship is very important.  T/WO or T/T is extremely attractive for a raider.

T/W was all-around meta. Live/white fleets etc. sucked for months now even tho people think it's not true.

I hope the woodchanges make it all more balanced and the differences smaller

You and I both know that even if difference in thickness between Oak/Oak and Teak/White oak is reduced from 10% to 5%, anyone who can will still go with the better wood and will be justified in doing so. As true in combat as it is in bed, Harder and faster is always better than soft and slow

true, however small differences make a smaller difference

if oak/oak is 2% slower and has 2% less thickness but is way cheaper I rather go for oak/oak fleets. :) Same reason why HAVOC was on cag/sab or teak/sab ships in dutch times (also 1st rates)

they would have to play around with the median woods - mahogany/sabicu/cag, etc, and then with costs. nobody will pay 50,000 doubloons (at current drop rates) for 1 centimeter of thickness on a belle poule. if doubloon costs are reduced, and they must be - currently market is so broken that buy contracts are never touched and rare woods are never sold (i find only Sabicu occasionally for 1200+ a log) - then market might recover enough that a proliferation of different wood types might function again. right now I am worried less about percentage points for woods and more about this economy getting fixed again.

on a side note, even with cost being a factor, assuming there is now a 10% thickness trim which can be added, would you not swallow the costs involved to field a fleet pood 3rd rates with 90cm+ thickness?

    • There is a limited number of ports that can build amazing ships with all the possible bonuses. Nations will have to fight for them.
  • Hostility mission changes
    • Hostility now can be gained only using missions.
    • OW hostility points are no longer granted to avoid exploits.

Not certain I like the limited ports because the only way to know which ports they are is with alts.

And not liking that OW NPC at a port does not raise hostility. It should IF we have the mission selected. I don't know what exploits there were, and they should still be negated if ppl cannot take the hostility mission, because they don't have a port within range.

Only winning with best woods is a legacy everyone wants to believe but if you just dont care if you lose a ship while your enemy does its a lot more fun. :)

but you still would never run a full live oak fleet ;)
whether it is the old pump stacking meta, thickness tanked aggies, or shallow Merc carro fleets, there will always be a meta which forces a meta answer
