Is it possible to join the game's lobby chat via IRC?

IRC is a form of text chat I believe. Although my experience with it has been a simple live chat room. 

 

This said, and the fact the the game is in alpha stages and probably does not support any outside modules, I would have to say no, but I am not 100% on that.

I thought it would be a nice way to hang around, see how its going and talk with the lads in a situation when you cant install the game (me, for example, have to use an old computer running linux for a few weeks).

If i understand how some stuff works at all, some online games use irc protocols for their lobbys. May be dead wrong tho.

You're not wrong, a lot of games use a IRC based chat, especially smaller games that can't easily make a chat system. That said the dev's have never mentioned IRC so who knows.
