  1. 1. Should we have Female Characters/Avatars

    • Yes, but they should be dressed respectfully/have the same clothing options as males.

    • Yes, but they should be scantily clad. (And the men too!)

    • No. We need Historical accuracy, women on ships were bad luck!

    • I don't care either way.

The inclusion of females (which I support if there are avatars in anyway) could bring some interesting "balance" mechanics to the game. We already know there will be skills/perks/whatever you want to call them based on nationality or alignment. I see this as something like a British captain with a British crew would have better trained gunners (thinking Napoleonic times) vs a French crew that might have something like better morale for boarding. So in the aspect of men vs woman, men might be given better navigation or handling ability (since historically they would of been aboard ships learning to sail since about the age of 9) vs woman who might have better income potential or stewarding skills i.e. supplies last longer/increased moral because hot chow always raises morale (since historically woman would accompany their captain husbands and the stewardess was the captains wife or first mates wife (on maritime vessels more often)).

Now I am not advocating these skills just what I see as a good possibility. I would also not care if there was no differences between them.

No.  Just....no.

I'll be looking for a smelly pirate hooker...make mine sexy and provocative.

Joe, I'm curious.. did you read any of the previous comments about this subject? You will have better luck finding what you seek offline than you will have finding it in Naval Action.

When avatar would be available in future. Female avatar must be dressed with clothes functional to sail life. Nothing more, nothing less. Sexy clothes is a no go because there are men and that disturbed the conduct of crew. Like real life of course.

Female crew on bikini or captain on bikini is immersion killer and take away seriousness or severity of all game.

According to some, Andropedia and others women can't get Bellona, Victory or Santissima Trinidad??? But she payd the same 40 buck like all of us... And she must choose be pirate or choose male avatar? ...   LoL that sounds... weird.

Can all of us take this topic with naturalness?

Sorry for my bad english.

@ Andropedia. Now I see in your signature that you are Juliette LaCroix that I remember a female teammate from a battle weeks ago.

What I was saying was, in favor of historical correctness, I wouldn't mind if female chars werent able to join a regular navy. I argue that at the same degree I argue not to give non navy characters SoLs. It never bothered me in PotBS and I don't see why it would here. Also the size of the ship isnt usually proportional to quality of play. so...

To shortly elaborate on my stand on the avatar debate. (sry for the PotBS screenshots, I in no way intend to turn this into PotBS, but I guess you ll get my point)

Well I'm a bit confused you have something simular at hand so easily :D secondly... well I think I know where the 3D "artist" got his inspiration.

I don't have a problem with that. To my knowledge no pirate ever took a SoL & even if there were some SoL taken it was never enough to make it a common pirate practice. IMO a pirate should not have any ship larger than the Snow & even then the Snow is pushing it.

If the game accurately portrays the period, it will naturally be very hard for a player to maintain a Ship of the Line. Most ports would not cater to large pirate gangs, so we could live in a world in which it would simply be impossible for a pirate to find enough crew, supplies and maintenance services for a ship of the line.

I'm generally against hard-coded impossibilities, but "soft impossibilities", which arise naturally from a (historical) context are fine.

well that is not completely true, but I generally agree with the statement. Id say 16 - 20 guns a broadside would be a good messure. Size of guns reasonable to compeed. Also pirate ships shouldnt be as sluggish as the snow. More like a upgun brig. Put that is not the subject of the thread, is it :)

Your forum avatar would be fine if not still a little too feminine with the open shirt and specially tailored outfit for what I would expect.

I doubt any of the 3 or so female captains except perhaps the chinese one had any well tailored clothing for their role. They would be wearing mens cloths.

That was the premise I used on that outfit. for the shirt yeah well. It s hot in the caribean and so on.... I could see that being some normal non formal shirt of the time

As far as I'm concerned, Madam Andropedia's LaCroix's clothing is quite tasteful and "period" enough.  It is indeed far more revealing than your genteel London Lady prefer, but I believe it looks to be of far more utility aboard ship than a ballgown.   ;)

As long as it's done with respect to both genders i really don't mind that NA will go the more politically correct route :)

Here's my question, are there really ever going to be any human models going to be walking around in ports and harbors in this game?  I would personally believe that there are not going to be any as I would be fine with just seeing my ship in the dockyard and just having a menu for the town for the Admiralty, Shipyards, Markets, etc..  I doubt that we are ever going to have any interaction with other players except with our ships on the open sea.  Would being a male or female really matter at all if we all are ships?

Exactly. Massive Multiplayer Online Avatar-less Naval Action game.

I think that it could be nice to have an avatar... but only for special ocasions... the avatar would work more like a "camera mode", because I think it would be awesome to walk around my ship during a battle, giving orders to my men, and raising the crew moral... It should be an Avatar, not an rpg charachter...

She is listed a little earlier in the thread. I have been trying to find detailed information on the British fleet she beat but have been unsuccessful thus far.

I never really cared that much about being able to play as a female, atleast as a female, 9 out of 10 times I play as a male because it looks better (usually), if they do implement it then sure, I will choose the female option but otherwise I dont care that much

I generally like to see women gaming and have had gamer friends that are female... However, females were fairly rare in this historical setting. Ideally I would like to see actual females playing female. The rarity would probably be about right for this game. There is no way to enforce it, nor would I want to, but I beg the men reading this to play male if they can. Too many games have guys playing as girls, because "if I'm going to stare at a butt all day, I want it to be a girl's". I say that is offensive to women, and silly. I play male characters all the time, and I am never staring at their butts...

Well if you where staring at male character but i would get worried for you m8 :)    j/k
