Semni Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I've been making notes of interesting maneuvers I encounter ingame and use myself. Recently I decided to put some effort into some handy little reference cards for such maneuvers. These won't make you magically better at the game but they ought to help you abstract and understand various different things you can do. So I'll start off with the one I've completed, more to come soon. 14
Illusive Tabby Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 This is actually beautiful! Keep it up and don't be afraid to ask for tips you may not know.
Flixerine Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Please make more of these, they seem really helpful in getting some more knowledge about what to do in certain sittuations. In fact, I don't know why there still isn't a wiki about tactics...
admin Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 make more and we will integrate it into the manual. 3
Semni Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Thanks for the overwhelmingly positive feedback. That really means a lot to me. I am not specifically knowledgeable on the game nor am I experienced with sailing, half of this is me internalizing several maneuvers that I've had used effectively against me, or seen used by others. It's nice to be capable of abstracting the scenario a bit, which has let me break down and figure out what makes it effective and understand when to employ it. Anyway, here's another one I've seen used against a somewhat overconfident opponent. If anybody has any maneuvers they would like to share. If they can explain them to me I'll happily turn em into one of these. 6
Grim DeGrim Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 I borrowed this one from HERE. Maybe you can make a card for "Crossing the T". Apparently I'm a newb, cannot figure out how to link the image here. Go and have a look
BullpupBarrie Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 These are excellent - thanks for putting the time in to making them. They remind me of dogfighting manouvres for Rise of Flight.
Master_Scrub Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Thank you so much for doing this. My hope is that my opponent hasn't read them!
greybuscat Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 That second card is incredibly useful. Not so much for someone new to make use of such a tactic, but to understand when it's being done to them. Have a slow-clap.
Semni Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 Grim: Crossing the T was more of a maneuver of the self propelled warships era. Though there are tactics that exploit similar sorts of ideas. I'll have a think. Master_Scrub: That was a thought that passed through my mind. I eventually figured that in the end this would simply encourage a higher level of play and more fun all around. Greybuscat: That is true, all of these cards can be used to recognize what another player is attempting to do and understand why they are doing this. Anyway, got another one, this is more of a fundamentals card. One thing I rather like about this is that as you are using the one broadside, you are reloading the other. 1
Grim DeGrim Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 No worries! The only question I'll put forth: could it a relevant tactic in fleet action in NA? (the answer may lay in the modified / similar maneuvers you referenced)
Magnum Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I like the single ship maneuvers, yes sir. Some fleet maneuvers would be great also!
TBear0770 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Aye all, thanks a lot for those cards. I will try those moves. Im very noob in sailship warfare even if I'm a a former Italian Navy Officer (I was involved in Search And Rescue duties from helicopters), but im quite expert in sailboat races. I have a couple of questions for experts. Do speed and being faster is an advantage? Can I "steal the wind" to other ships by covering my adversary with my sails from downwind side? is this modeled by the game phisics?
Destraex Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 No stealing the wind currently. It was thought that the code and frame hit apart from people griefing with it was not worth the effort. A real shame really. I don't know how effective stealing the wind on ships this large was though in comparison to tiny modern yachts.
Eustratius Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 It'd probably be worthwhile to cover even dirt simple things like how to approach an enemy when you do and don't have the weather gage. I'm sure it's frustrating for people to be exposed to so much fire when approaching an enemy so anything to mitigate that would be valuable.
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 No stealing the wind currently. It was thought that the code and frame hit apart from people griefing with it was not worth the effort. A real shame really. I don't know how effective stealing the wind on ships this large was though in comparison to tiny modern yachts. I'd say quite effective - can you imagine the wind shadow a tallship puts out? 1
Semni Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 I've got a spot of bother to report. The computer I use for graphics decided that living was for stiffs so it'll take me a wee bit to get back on track. Don't worry, I havn't lost any work, just need to get the right software installed on this computer.
