To be honest with you, I would go watch some youtube videos on the game first. Aside from that here's a simple breakdown

 

PRO's:

~Top notch graphics

~Great combat mechanics

~Runs very smoothly

~Huge room to grow

~Age of Sail games are hard to come by (good ones at least)

~Great community, we will help you get better

~Since it is early, we get a say in what happens in the development

 

CON's:

~It is early so it's very barebones

~Slower paced (it's not a COD or AC4 game)

~Learning curve can be a bit steep for an inexperienced age of sail gamer

~Target tracking (gun aiming) will take you a few games to get down

~Can't macro your buttons (that I've found yet, though there are few to learn)

 

All in all it's up to you, these are just things I took into consideration before preordering. Hope this helps clarify!

As the title says $40 dollars (£26.46p for me) is a lot of money to spend. Is worth the money because I don't mind its not complete yet, because it seems good and I enjoy air/ship and tank combat games and this seems to have a simular look to AC4 Black Flag so just wondering if its worth to wait or to buy it?

This game is cheap for Australia. We get charged $40-$90 here. So no problem for me.

If you prefer arcade action I would be very careful before getting this. This is a little less disney pirate action and a more real.

There is a lot more love going into this game than the larger production teams like black flags put in as well. A lot of attention to detail.

 

I suggest watching the hornblower TV series and master and commander movie to see if you really have a taste for something a little more real.

Compare these to the movies series pirates of the Caribbean and you have the difference in a nut shell.

 

Does not mean it's not for you if you want to step up a bit from black flag. But the focus is a little different.

I am not a gamer by any stretch of the imagination, but Naval Action, fo me, is all about atmosphere and immersion.

 

Not an easy thing to define.

As i bought the preorder i read the statement by the devs, (i dont remember the exact words but factly it meant) that if you (the player) want to play a developed game then better wait until its a game, momentary only a test of shipcombat functionality. And thats why i still not 'critisize' the game, or can say its better than this or that, because its to early to see the wanted gameplay because its definetely not possible to play as the wanted game. Its a test of some ships in combat but if i read what devs will make as gameplay its only a small (sure a very important) part. What i can test i like very much, but also that still not the final product. So like any game-programm in an early stage much many only in imagination and like nearly all games that imagination often disappointed if folks make to much interpretations of what could be possible in their mind. So i focus really more whats testable 'now' and i refuse to say i am playing Naval Action :D.

Anyway i absolutely think its on a good way for my preferences. But i am more a 'waiter' of the next step.

I like both Ac4 and NA (AC pleasantly surprised me for a game "for the masses") and im not even an age of sail ethusiast, atleast i wasnt until recently

40$ on a game that might totally worth it or you can waste it on things like these...

the games i'd compare it to (int it's current state) would be World of Tanks and War Thunder.

Essentially a team based war game where you take the place of one unit in the battle.

In war thunder you are a plane dog fighting with the foe. Or a tank skulking in the bushes waiting to ambush the enemy.

In world of tanks your a tank driving right across the middle of malinovka dying within the first two minutes of the battle and leaving your team to despair (at least from what i always see as i drive to the hill). Or a bottom tier heavy tank that the enemy SPGs seem to have a fixation for.

In NA your a ship of the line (ok not a SOL at early tiers but you see what i mean) sailing across the ocean blue unloading broad side into the enemy stern when you get the chance. All the time marveling at the pretty graphics and how it can only be pre-alpha

I have played both WoT and WT both are enjoyable but the grind in both got silly and it took ages to get to but still fun

Really? Fair enough I guess. 

But WOT and WT were nothing close to what they were trying to represent. 

Where as Naval Action is fairly close to sailing combat. It's not missing anything significant.

WOT especially was missing almost everything.

Hi guys not on topic here but, I literally just ordered the game about 5 minutes ago. Im very excited to play it, does any one know when I actually get the key and how they send it? I was never asked t give any kind of email or anything? :/ quite worried. PS. I WANT TO PLAY IT NOW XD

Keys will be sent on fridays to the email address provided with your paypal account. There might be additional batches sent during the weekend if you pre-order on friday before a certain time.

It's already a very good game and will only get better - but I've always been into ships and sailing

you have a lot to learn and nothing to explain it.

No. Learning to handle smaller ships before you can progress to the larger ones.

makes it easier to learn.

 

It is s actually more for sailor enthusiasts then normal gamers.

Yes you can read it in the forum or look Youtubevideos. But you don't get answers ingame. No tutorial, no tipps, nothing.

 

Do you remember the time when you only have the Styx? You only have 4 cannons on every side, the light npc enemy (i think) has a brigg with 8 cannons each side. Sou you are outgunned from the start. The NPC easily gives you well target broadsides while you have problems with aiming (cause there is no help like flight indicators) and wasting 25% of your firepower for each testshot.

 

For me, a untrained player, its really hard to learn aiming. I only managed to get the next ship while going PVP and fire on the big ships which i cant miss.

 

And normal gamers are people which expect for example target indicators like in AC and a more fast gameplay. If you want compare to ego shooters, i think naval action would be like Arma. And thats not a game for the COD/Battlefield mainstream.

We are definitely not AC3/4. But we love their game. They shown us some things that we are borrowing especially immersion wise

 

Some people argue that our ships are too fast. I personally think we found the good balance ;) and it feels more like Battlefield recon or helicopter gameplay on hardcore servers - deep, but not boring or tedious. The goal of the sea trials to fine tune good things, eliminate bugs and annoyances, and add new features based on your suggestions and we are constantly improving the product. 

 

If prospective buyers want to contribute to making the best Age of Sail combat game and help us improve it by giving feedback - that would be another great reason to buy.

I agree that the ships atm are balanced and I hope you can keep to your promises becuase many devs havent an example of this would be dungeon keeper moible game from EA which was awful and put the final nail in the coffin for that series. :(

Sorry for the missunderstanding. I really like Naval Action, it's the kind of game i'm looking for.

 

But i thougth the thread opener expect something like AC4 and so i think he could be dissapointed when he see everything is more simulation than action.

The CoD mainstream should go play World of Warships when it comes out. I don't think instant gratification players will be a good target audience for this game. Part of the skill is the lack of gunnery input. Adding a near-guaranteed hit mechanic would destroy the playability of the game, and remove the ability of little ships to coexist on the battlefield with larger ships.

I think you did yourself a disservice by not learning gunnery in the Lynx/Cutter. Learning to hit the little targets on a unstable platform better prepares you for longer distance shooting later. :)

Incidentally, even World of Warships doesn't have an instant hit mechanic, and it does require you to lead ships. At least at its current state.

 

Although it has some following mechanic where the crosshairs follow the movement of a locked-on target, that's not terribly out of place for the era that game represents.

 

It also has no open world, of course.

I won't violate my NDA by commenting specifically, but the "World of" Series (let's just stick to tanks and warplanes here) adjusts many things for you to hit.  Your tank reticule automatically shifts to account for drop when you're on a target.  In planes, they provide reasonably accurate lead indicators so you don't need to learn to estimate the lead on your shot.  Massive RNG is applied to prevent someone from being too good accuracy wise.  You can let the computer fly your plane and just point your mouse where you want the nose to go in planes.  There are many things that they have in those games to remove skill and "dumb it down" so to speak.  That is not what I want to see in this game.  While we don't need 100% accurate sail handling and sailing physics, we do need to continue to express the need to require a level of mastery to do very well, and encourage people to develop skill to excel.  Adding all kinds of aiming helpers does not meet that need in my opinion.  That's all I was saying above.
