Situation:

5 4th rates and 1 5th rate engage 2 3rd rates.

what would be your strategy for the Frigate fleet to be victorious

Easy

Chain, kite if necessary, once low enough on sails proceed to seperate the two, hug one and sink through damage; rake and decrew and board the other

Isolate one and kill it then kill 2nd one.

 

Biggest mistakes you can do is exchanging broadsides 1:1 and splitting up.

Focus and isolate one. Chain, wait for sail rep, chain again to <70%, hug and kill. Enjoy dismantling the other one.

I agree with notes of others - chain, single out, sink  I would just add that you should put 5th rate on raking duty. You also need to engage very close - that's one of the main mistakes of unexperienced captains that they try to fight from afar, often shooting on angled ships. You need to get aggressive and close in to sink one quickly, as you can easily out-repair the enemy, especially once he repaired sails.
