MarcoRossolini Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 I know this is probably unlikely, but what are the chances of this game appearing on Mac? I ask because this is just the sort of game my father (who's a big fan of Aubrey-Maturin etc) would be into, however he's a member of the Mac Master race. Is there a possibility of this in the future?
BBrown Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Yeah, also he should build a custom pc.. Cheaper than buying it out of the box and loads more powerful.
admin Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 We wanted to love the mac market But steam sales of our other game show that PC is 99% of the audience. There is a cheat for all mac users. Install windows a second system. we have 2 developers who play and code on mac (but using windows as a second system) 1
MarcoRossolini Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 Thanks admin for the info, such a shame, I'll see if I can't think of something...
Captain Pugwash Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Ahoy there Marco, I am an iMac user, but will have to use Bootcamp to sail the seven seas (just as soon as I get my Steam keys!). On Bootcamp I play World of Tanks (from Beta testing) and War Thunder until it got ported to Mac. There is a trade off in performance, but not much. As long as your fathers system under Bootcamp running Windows 7 meets the tech requirments the game will play fine and look great. The biggest drawback is rebooting from Mac to Windows which takes about 10 minutes (with all the Windows update malarky!) I wouldn't recomend using VM or Parallels. They take a big hit in performance and are just a pain to configure for gaming. Let me know if you want any further advice, Sir, I remain sincerly yours Captain Pugwash
Thomas Blackwell Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Pugwash is alive from my Childhood and apparently using a Mac. I'm going to need some time to accept this. 2

He has a macbook pro and before he built his custom pc he had a mac desktop. Both of which he runs windows bootcamp on
Krasimir Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 dude just buy real pc -much cheeper, much less problems, much powerfull and theres bonus - thousands of free software
DanielCoffey Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 While you do still have to reboot over from Mac to Windows to play non-OSX games, there is a free app called BootChamp from www.kainjow.com which helps streamline this. It creates an icon on your top menu bar which allows you to choose the next boot device for the next reboot. You can be in windows in half a minute if you have an SSD. A Mac is perfectly capable of playing Windows games - even a MacBook. They all have Intel processors. The memory is fast. The only issue for the MacBook users is the limited option of GPUs which many Windows laptops share. If you are lucky enough to have a tower Mac Pro desktop (the 2012 and earlier models), you can even put almost all PC GPUs into them providing you avoid the more power hungry models. An nVidia 970 is a straight drop in, the 980 requires slightly modified firmware to modify the power consumption. MacVidCards in the US does custom firmware for the modern NVidia GPUs and there are other options if you want to do it yourself.
JMF Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 For what it is worth I use boot camp on a MacBook Pro and can report the game works like a dream.
MarcoRossolini Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 dude just buy real pc -much cheeper, much less problems, much powerfull and theres bonus - thousands of free software Not all of us are endowed with stacks of money... Thanks, I doubt my dad will be interested in going to these lengths though... shame...
SYN_Bloody-Bandy Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Marco, As others have suggested, but perhaps with some inaccuracy, if your father's Mac has an Intel chip (and I suspect it does, it has been a while since IBM...) he can easily create (or perhaps you can for him) a partition on his harddrive and install a copy of Windows, XP, Vista, 7,.... This is called Bootcamp and it is part of the iOS and is well documented on the Apple Support pages. I was involved in its beta testing though not a big deal, it was open to the public in 2006. It takes me less than a minute to boot into either OS on my workstation. The only limitation is that 4 GB of RAM will be recognized on the PC side, and is not really much of an issue if one is only playing games on the PC side (not multitasking), though admittedly more demanding games are now pushing that RAM ceiling, As mentioned, the virtual machine OS offerings such as Parallels are not acceptable for gaming, as I understand they actually need to create a virtual video card without the performance required for games. That may have changed though. Contra to all the Mac bashing posts, when I purchased my Mac Pro a few years ago it was the most powerful workstation available and was priced less than similar Dell products or boutique offerings. It is true that building your own would cost much less, but have read several posts by people who thought they could, and well... Then there are those people who just don't understand that not everybody has the skills/knowledge/ability to do so, and love to comment that if you don't, you are stupid for buying. I'm off the soapbox now...
MarcoRossolini Posted January 21, 2015 Author Posted January 21, 2015 ^^ Thanks Bandy, much appreciated, I'll see what I can do... Would you by chance be another RoF convert...?
Destraex Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 For what it is worth I use boot camp on a MacBook Pro and can report the game works like a dream. that's but cause under the bonnet the mac IS just an expensive PC.
Juliette LaCroix Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Wouldn't it be possible to remove the effects that require shader model 5 and just build the unity project for Mac? Ofc I dont know that what extend you might use your own content pipeline and libraries that might be to bothersome to implement for mac.
JMF Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 that's but cause under the bonnet the mac IS just an expensive PC. True, in that Macs use the same components available to make PCs. They are however very well made and and give access to another operating system and other software. Not everyone's cup of tea, but each to their own.
