So yeah, there wasn't a chance to escape, just to win or be recorded as a gallant opponent.

So, how to allow captains that know they can fight the odds, say like 2 vs 6, to have their moments of glory in the zone ?

The zone should be set up for most of us, not the precious few. I won't quote history. Fun for the common man, if you will.

Companions sailing together offer comfort and security when facing half numbers of unknown quality. Facing equal odds is very risky.
