HachiRoku Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 I've been wondering to myself more and more if the wind rotation in battles and port battles is doing more harm than good. If you think about the old port battles and the main reason people complained about 1 circle. Kiting. If wind didn't shift then you would have to run out of circle in 10-20min and would be forced to fight sooner than latee. Having it shift in open sea battles is bad in my oppinion and I would like to see pb without wind shifting too. What are peoples thoughts on this?
Slim McSauce Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 A small wind shift of 20 degrees or so every 20 minutes is fine. Its when the wind seems to constantly shift in one direction throughout the course of a battle that I have a problem with. The wind advantage should stay the wind advantage.
Palatinose Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 I like it on the open world, got tweaked to a very playable level. For pb's (big ones): very hard and frustrating if you work for your wind postion for 15 minutes, finally reach it and lose it by a wind turn. Basically what @Havelock said. On 15.1.2018 at 12:50 PM, Havelock said: Windchange in PBs is still too much. A 90° rotation always leads to one of the following: 1) Two fleets are approaching at beam reach. Since we have a 5 minute join timer, the first windturn will occur after 10 minutes of sailing. At this point theres a 50/50 chance for either of the attacker or the defender getting full wind control => totally RNG based mechanic, if you have the wind into your face as attcker you might aswell leave here since the defender probably captures all 3 circles 2) The attcker starts with full wind advantage. He will approach the first circle fast, the defender will send one ship downwind to capture 2 circles. Before the fleets clash though, the first wind change will occur. Now theres a 100% chance for the attacker to lose its advantage and initiate the fight at beam reach. => basically no RNG here, but the wind change takes the initiative from the attacker by default To make windchanges less decisive for fleet engagements it needs to be less drastic and more predictable. I suggest to 1) slow it down to 45° every 10 minutes instead of 90° every 15 minutes. You can not lose the wind advantage then if you fought for it. 2) add an indicator where the wind will change next time (i think experienced sailors had a good feeling about wind changes back then, right?). This involves further planning and takes RNG wind advantage gifts out of the game.
HachiRoku Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 I have an idea about pb without wind shifting. 1. Circle would be enough to keep defender from kiting then wouldn't it? A larger one than now but 1. The defender can join circle where he wants and attacker must Approach like now.

Christendom Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 I guess if we’re going to simulate real world conditions the wind would only change slightly in the span of a couple hours. It’s intensity would change more frequently though which would make in game fighting interesting. Wind doesn’t bother me as much now. Good sailors can handle it. Take a look at the BF beach party during yesterday’s PB at Bahia. Rus handled the wind, BF did not. 1

I was chasing a Indef with a friend. I bet the Indef was able to sail 15kn and therefore 2kn faster than us. Because of the Wind changes and the tagging system we were able to run him down after 80min. The battle started between MT and LT. First the wind blew him to LT then we got a wind change. He didnt adjust heading so we got closer. He changed course for best wind heading to Saint Nic. Wind kept changing and blew him to MT. I swear at the end of the battle we were roughly at the same location where we started. With a steady wind there would have been no way that we caught him. But the Indef wasnt paying attention to the wind and only adjusted heading when we got close again. Not sure if i like that. Edited January 18, 2018 by z4ys

Vintorius Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 (edited) The current wind in battles is nothing close to accurate. Nor sure what the devs were going for here with a wind change so often as it does. Speaking from a Pilots POV in my work career seeing the wind shift that often would be considered a variable wind. Which does not happen often. If they are trying to just get the players to have to tack more and work with the wind, ok I understand that. But why does it have to be so often? You shouldnt have to have a wind change every few minutes. It literally only benefits people running in battles. It just allows them to tack over and continue on. Whereas as it was before players doing the pursing were able to use the wind to their advantage to steadily and sometimes slowly gain on their opponents using the angle of the wind.. Here is what I propose. Allow the wind to be variable depending on the battle. You enter some battles and there might not be any wind. Enter another battle and the wind is constant from one direction. Enter another battle and the wind might have wind shifts like it is now. I think that would be the most ideal and practical thing to see. Edited January 20, 2018 by Vintorius 1
sveno Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I liked the wind in we had in 2017 in portbattles. There was wind changes, but very subtle. 1
