So in the furture this game is supposed to be based on trade, exploration and a bit of pirating and combat.

 

As a trader/explorer you will want to be able to deliver your load, and have very little interst in battling. So if being attacked, and you manage to immobilize your enemy by cutting masts, destroying sails or damage the hull in a way that they cannot defend themselves anymore, you should just have the option to leave and continue on your way, and repair on the way, at the cost of a tiny bit speed for as long as the preliminary repairs last, without the pirates being able to repair huge damage within seconds.

 

As a Pirate you don't jsut want to destroy enemies, it is in fact against your interest, you want their load. A trader you manage to immobilize shouldn't just be able to move away 30 seconds after you shot away their masts, so you can enter the ship and steal the load/continue the fight on the enemy ship.

 

At the same time, and for that same reason, you could make ships more/realistically durable, since sinking enemy ships is no longer the primary objective.
