I've been recently playing Naval Action again after over a year hiatus.  Last time I played, you could become part of the Pirate nation by attacking your own nation.  Why was this removed? It felt like a very immersive part of the game.

I believe the reason it was removed was that a lot of players accidently became pirate this way when they did not mean to, ultimately creating issues where they would have to delete their character to go back to their mother nation.

While I agree it was a nice feature, I am not sure if it would work in the current game. I think the entire Pirate nation eventually should get a look at.

I had no idea this was a thing.

It seems like a great idea that the way to start a career as a Brit is to start a new character as a Brit.   But it was a little odd that to start a career as a Pirate you merely start one of hundreds of battles without carefully reading what you are clicking on.

I never could relate to the immersion of becoming a pirate without firing a single shot at a friendly ship.  The process would have seemed more realistic if after starting the battle instance one had to inflict damage (or at least shoot) on a friendly ship before being considered a pirate ... with no chance of clemency.   It was one of those necessary trade offs where we lost realism to prevent meta-gaming advantage.

Any one that said they accidentally flipped was BS.  You had to confirm twice you where going to attack them and than it reminds you your going to turn pirate. It was more pulled cause of folks zerging to one nation more like it.  Though with the papers now it's easy to switch.  Though I would love to have a reputation system that allows you to change nation in game through doing Pirate deeds or working with a nation as a privateer.

maybe in a patch it was, but the first iteration of when OW just came out it did not ask you to confirm at all.

Oh yah when it first came out folks where doing it all the time,  than they patched it and you had to tag them.  It says your are sure.  You said sure.  Than it says if you attack them you will become pirate.  I know that is how I became pirate.  Than suddenly a lot of folks that switched over at the time said it was an accident when it really wasn't, it was just use getting out of the US or other nations.
