The Deacon Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 OK maybe I missed something somewhere but I just downlaoded the game last nigth from Steam and after a few tries it does launch but I have no idea what to do in the interface or for that matter once I manage to enter a lobby and start sailing. Is there ANY kind of instruction document anywhere?!
Prater Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 User Interface (UI) Explanations and Keyboard Shortcuts are in the Sea Trials forum. You select your ship by clicking on the type in the lobby. You can customize your ship by clicking on Constructor (or is it Customize?) at the bottom of the screen and change your cannon loadout if you so choose. You can join small ship pvp, small ship pve, pvp and pve. Small ships are for brigs and down. The regular pvp and pve is for everyone between yacht and victory, so watch out in pvp. Once you join pvp you cannot cancel or exit. The timer will count down and then the match will load. There are videos and tips on how to manually sail and tack in the Sea Trials forum. Also, if you watch people's youtube videos you will get a feel for how to play.As a new player, even though the Yacht is a very nice small ship, you need to start out as the lynx (also a nice small ship) so that you can progress to bigger ships. The yacht is just a fun ship at the moment with no progression but I read that once more ships are added it will be required for them. Right now you "level up" by the amount of damage you cause. So go cause damage to other ships in the lynx, and progress to the cutter, and so on.
Henry d'Esterre Darby Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 It's Constructor. Prater is spot on - go to the Sea Trials forum and do some reading. There are lots of great threads there. Otherwise, hit enter in that starting screen and ask questions in chat. If someone is in between games, you may find some help there too.
Prater Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Ah, yes, I forgot about chat. We are typically a very helpful bunch of people, don't be afraid to ask questions in the lobby or the game. I remember fighting Maturin once and asking him how to tack properly in the cutter. He told me even though we were fighting. To enter team chat in game hit enter then tab. To go back to the ALL channel hit tab again. Once you hit enter though, your focus will stay in the chat function until you hit escape or right click your mouse.

sab9999 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Tell us what you find most lacking or most confusing? We need this for our guide. Its not really that bad, it took me like 10 minutes to figure out. Just make a big red button that says play now with a dropdown menu with the options to play with other ships of your type or with anything. Also details about each gun type in the constructor would be nice (range, reload time, weight)
Naxos Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 Hi all, downloaded yesterday and already loving the game Maybe the following impressions can contribute to a guide or improve the UI, as they show what a noob could find as confusing in the first hours -assuming ofc that a person didnt read too much in the forums before before the game starts, the input (or controls), I was confused why you could assign every button twice (primary/secondary), also there is an "auto-cannoneer" button, but the shooting is done manually isnt is? as mentioned above, some explanation in the constructor menu about the different cannons available (+difference of long versions, range etc), maybe as you hover the mouse over the cannons? also, that you cannot change too much before you get the Surprise the different ammo types- okay whoever played other games of this era knows the drill, but for example "double shot" was not so clear, or that grape has no effect if the armor is still up while taking damage in battle, if you type 5 for repairs, armor and rudder repairs work fine, but pump not, you have to change into survival mode to pump out the water? At the end I must say that a very friendly player helped me in a 1v1 to answer most of the questions, while his Bellona played with my Lynx great community! The controls are designed very intuitively, so its very easy to sail in the first fights This game is nice work, especially for a team of <10 people!

Yup! All manual shooting. as mentioned above, some explanation in the constructor menu about the different cannons available (+difference of long versions, range etc), maybe as you hover the mouse over the cannons? also, that you cannot change too much before you get the Surprise There's not much to change before you get Surprise - those are single deck ships so they only have one row of guns on each side to change and, at lest in the case of the Cutter, Lynx, and Yacht, no chasers to change either. the different ammo types- okay whoever played other games of this era knows the drill, but for example "double shot" was not so clear, or that grape has no effect if the armor is still up Grape has effect with the armor up, but you need to not shoot it at the armor - try shooting just above. while taking damage in battle, if you type 5 for repairs, armor and rudder repairs work fine, but pump not, you have to change into survival mode to pump out the water? Pump repairs are for when your pump is red or yellow and you need it now. Works fine, but only works to repair the pump, you're right in that you need to enter survival mode to pump ship. At the end I must say that a very friendly player helped me in a 1v1 to answer most of the questions, while his Bellona played with my Lynx great community! Great impressions here, I know Admin will find them very valuable for new-person help! Welcome.
Naxos Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Many thanks Henry, highly appreciated! One thing I could not find any information is about the differences of the cannons. Apologies if this is already discussed in a separate topic in the forums For the small ships Yacht, Lynx, Cutter and Brig you have the choice between 4pd 4pd long 6pd 6pd long 12 carronade (not sure for Lynx but Cutter can equip them) 18 carronade (brig only) For the larger ships I dont know (yet), but could imagine this topic is not overly important anymore. However with smaller ships and their few available cannons the choice of picking the right guns is very important Can anyone tell me where the major difference between long versions and normal version is, also some people roll with 4pd on their brig, why not taking the larger 6pd as this gun makes more damage? And do a lot of guys roll with carronades on the small vessels?

Carronades are sort of bad right now but if you can get close enough they do some good damage. 1
