Hello Captains

We are looking for captains interested in discussing battleships of 1880 to 1939 with us: discussing in general and in great (intricate) detail. Ideally you must know a lot about battleship combat and battleship design. Rangefinders, torpedoes, pre-heaters, fire directors, cross-deck fire, cemented krupp armor, luddite charges, screening formation types, admiral names, Vickers steel bar prices, officer names maybe. You may even never remember why you know all this things. You never thought this knowledge would be useful - but here is the thing - it will be extremely useful to us.

I have degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering and have always been extremely fascinated with the steel warship era, particularly the dreadnought era. I'd certainly like to help contribute. I also have a significant library with not only general volumes but technical treatises on interwar ships (I know you said until 1939 but most of my information/knowledge goes through 1945).

As an example, here is part of my library.

WOW.. i have all of these except for Janes books.

Yes. But incoming is a strong word.

We were launching 1 game a year in over last 4 years. We plan to launch one more in 2017 and of course to ship something new in 2019 we have to start making it some day this year.

I have not seen those books before but they look very useful - exactly the sort of thing I'm always buying. I have the US ONI WWII recognition books but nothing like that.

I can really recommend Ruger, hw discusses the Brit-German armsrace from 1890-1918 in great detail.

I don´t know too much about warships of the early XX century but I´ve played a game called Rule the Waves which is set in this time. You can develop, modify and create ship models of different nations. Maybe you can find some info on this game.

I'll take a look at my online stash of books. There will definetely be something helpful.

Also i have an interest in the actions of the Greek Navy in the Balkan Wars,WWI and WWII. I have visited the armored cruiser Averoff of the Greek Navy, a heavily modified Italian built cruiser of the Pisa class. I will also visit it again this year after the maintenance work is completed. I have some info about Greek ships used in that era.

I would recommend slaughtererer. He served in the Royal Navy , was in battlegroups with USS Iowa and USS Missouri. And is now teaching in the Royal Navy. Probably the number one guy in terms of naval warfare knowledge you can get your hands on. if you unban him.

1880-1939 seems like a very interesting and somewhat unusual period to cover, I will be watching with a lot of interest to how things might develop here. My main concern that while its a relatively small date window the technology change during the period is so huge, these years covering the final ironclad wooden hulled warships to the really quite modern builds like HMS Belfast, giving a huge and difficult possible array of ships to properly balance. My other concern with this style of game is how satisfying the large turrets will really feel after we have been spoiled by Naval action and the 100+ gun first rates firing huge broadsides. It will surely be an interesting learning experience for everyone involved and hopefully feel a lot less arcade than other releases on the market right now.

To my mind the first half of the period covers some impressive weaponry but somewhat poor resistance to the guns and torpedos available, as naval armour adapted along a much more slow line. This gap between weapons and armour is only further solidified by advances in range finding and the (re-)invention of the constant aim system, while second half covers the world wars, drednaughts and how navies dealt with the limitations of firepower after the treaty of Versailles.  I look forwards to seeing some more information on the project and perhaps more of what is being aimed to do by the team.

I do hope you include some good dazzle camouflage

I own some books covering the timeframe. One of them deals with the development of the warships in this era, but is maily focused on 1905 to 1970. I'm sure you have better sources.

It covers all operations the german navy undertook during WW I, written by suvivors. The quality of the reports is mixed, but some are quite usefull. Also it contains a lot of pictures. Unfortunately it's written in german. Maybe it is usefull ...?

balancing is not going to be a problem as it will be a single player game.

slaughts was actually at jutland ..he was a young dabber on the Invincible
