Is there some way to tell if a battle is about to end? What I mean is this, you take all the objectives and win the battle. When the timer runs up, you don't click "finish" but you keep the battle going. It seems like sometimes I can keep the battle going for over an hour (real time) but other times the battle will end by itself twenty minutes (real time) later. Thanks.

The upper left side of the UI shows the date and time. Some battles can be played until it reaches a certain date and time.

Thanks for your response.  Regrettably, I looked at it and it doesn't tell me when the battle will end.  I just wish I knew if the battle would end at a certain time.  Its frustrating when you keep driving the enemy to where you want them to go, then right before you crush them, battle over.

@alucardpg

There's big text with the words "MISSION TIME" with a timer counting down on the upper right hand corner of the screen.

You can also get the date and time of the current battle just above the left side of the force bar, though that's less important unless things start getting into night and you have the chance to extend battle.

If I were to take a guess, it would end on the "historical" date and time or it's totally arbitrary. What you can do is play a battle and record the date and time at which each battle will end.

I have considered keeping notes on every single battle with how much extra time you get after the timer runs out, which I think is really what the OP is getting at.

Yeah, it feels arbitrary. Some battles will let you keep going while timers are contested, some let you keep going while allowing you to click the button to end early, some will advance/end immediately. No real way of predicting beforehand.

15  minutes.

It was announced. And I do a lot of this with tagging traders and letting them run; When the timer is replaced with that other white text you invariably have 15 minutes. (or so I thought?)

Where was that announced? I've only bought the game recently after it entered full release.

Also, my impression is that the timing feels random, but maybe it is a fixed amount of time and I just didn't catch on. Or perhaps it does have something to do with sometimes having a contested point and sometimes not.

There's no real, concrete fixed time.  If you look at the second day of Chancellorsville with Jackson's Flank, you can delay from the end time around 10PM all the way up until 12:45AM in the morning before game forces an end.
