Not letting us capture 4th rates was a good save. Would have been a mess making 4th rates so easy to get.

I mean when was the last time you saw vets sail and fight in anything other than a 5th rate or bigger?

Yesterday? :-p

Granted my guild has been doing some shallow water stuff lately and when we decide to go look for someone to kill in deep water, we just stay in those ships. We seriously would have captured a L'Ocean two days ago, using 6th rates, but he got to a fort. We could have stayed on his backside all day but the fort was too much for a bunch of 6th rates. Got his back armor down and were raking his crew no problem, though. We've sunk numerous Frigates and Surprises recently using our 6th rates, too. (Niagaras and Heavy Rattlers, so top end 6th rates, but still.)

Also, we have Anne, who almost exclusively sails a Snow. (We keep offering to make her better ships but she really likes the Snow.)

6th rate PvP is perfectly functional, it's just most people can afford better, so they do.

IMO, vets PvP in 5th rates because they are good, fast and we can afford lots of them so why not.

anyone test this? Whats the penalty on captured AI ships?

I've heard they are random frame + NO trim. Not even crew space. They still have all the slots though. 3/5.

P.S.

The more I think about this capturable 5th rate thing, the more I'm willing to try it. Yes, it will create kamikaze tactics and fire ships will be way more common but if it lets, frankly, scrubs, get out and PvP more then it's worth a shot. Maybe after a month of disposable PvP they will think "wow this is great but I could probably do even better in a custom Connie or Bellona."

Maybe it will act as a stepping stone.

I also think people who PvP in Bellonas will get a lot more kills now and, ideally, the people they kill won't feel quite so bad about it.

Ai ships have all perma and shipknowledge slots

They are fir or oak

They just have one inbuild instead of 2 (player made or shop bought)

They have all cannons as med equiped

Too many captains on this forum want Naval Action to be crafted in a manner that supports their style of gameplay at the expense of someone elses. NPC ship capture isn't a threat to crafting, it isn't a threat to PVP and it is not going to cause an increase in ganking, trolling, spooning or whatever other boogyman some believe lurk in the shadows of the OW.  Naval Action is at it's very best when the developers increase the options of the players, not restrict them.

I agree with your premise, that more game styles should be supported when possible, but this does hurt crafting.  I have ships on the market that used to sell in 20 minutes that are sitting unsold 4 days later.  And prices on 5th rates and down have completely crashed with the glut of supply. Surprises, Indefats, Frigates,Traders Brigs, Snows, Indiamen, etc, etc.  Now, I'm lucky enough to be able to craft 4th rates, and maybe one day 3+ rates, but many beginning crafters are not.  Indeed I basically financed my shipyard/permit/blueprint leveling by selling traders brigs and surprises that I crafted.  Not an option now.

As with many recent changes and proposed changes, I'm left asking myself what possible problem was this designed to fix?  Too many crafters?  Its not like you couldn't board ships before, they just had to be human controlled and a fair fight.  Now there are free ships sailing around everywhere, just press nine and ram it.  The old "9 and ram the AI" is a gameplay "style" that needed support?  Ha.

Since this change I have run into a lot more enemy 5th rates such as the frigate in PVP. I suppose that's a good change because for the most part I don't care if I'm sinking an NPC built frigate or a player made frigate. The combat mark reward is the same. I've also caught more than one guy with an AI LGV in their fleet that they have captured, slowing them down allowing me to pounce in OW.

The trader market is still basically dead, but since NPC frigates costed maybe 70k before the patch, they were almost free anyways. Now they are just ending up in the hands of newbies easier which is easy food for me.

But not only new players will use them. I can see the griefing and trolling that lurks behind the horizon. Or is everyone short minded regarding the basic cutter incidents? Which were just the top of the iceberg regarding freeships exploits.

You are correct.  The majority of players and devs seem to have no ability to plan even 15 minutes into the future or to make basic assumptions.  This game has suffered tremendously because of it and is the reason they bounce from one extreme to the next with nothing in between and then bounce all the way back to a previous extreme.

For the life of me I honestly think they want this game to fail and arejust using it as a test bed for something else.
