I didn't mean to sound judgmental, just to show how much this game is primarily MMO and PVP-oriented. It was just a way to answer your initial question  ;) . No harm intended  :) .

I didn't take it as such good sir.  In fact I love how the community pulls together to get the right information to the people who need it.  Cheers :D

If you play Total War for the battles in single player, you are indeed easy to please. Watching the AI run around in circles while you bombard them with catapults gets old pretty fast.

Back to NA. I for one am completely uninterested in clan warfare and organized battles. I want to explore, gather personal wealth, collect rare items, customize my ship/crew and play encounter battles as they happen. If I wanted one-off fleet actions between teams, the open world would just be an obstacle. All I need would be a big red BATTLE button.

I thought this was a single-player game when I found the website and fell in love with it. The one single key word on the site, "guilds," should have thrown up the MMO flag but it wasn't until I started reading here on the forums that I realized it is looking like a primarily PvP game. I've got no problem with online games, mind you, though I end up playing them on my own anyway so they become pretty boring for me without a world/story to engage in which doesn't involve other players. I just don't manage to meet and group up with other people online, though not from a lack of trying. So MMO's have very short lifespans with me; they generally last until the novelty of the setting wears off, and I get sick of being a solo player in a multi-player world, and then I leave.

The biggest issue I will have with this as an MMO, however, is that from a bit of a passion for pirates/piracy throughout naval history I intend(ed) to play as a pirate, and this seemed like a dream game for my love of not only all things Age Of Sail, but more particularly sailing under a Black Flag. But, I absolutely do NOT want to sail around ruining other players' fun simply for my own. I have no problem pillaging everything I can from a NPC, but other people, that's just not me (so I'll be playing as a privateer just to attempt to justify my actions, to myself. Lol).

At least this game clearly has some other avenues to quench my thirst for sailing even as an online game, but being an MMO does make it quite a bit less than what I have been looking for, for so long. Especially without everything that makes a single-player game so great, such as the story, a more in-depth AI (rather than relying on players), missions/side missions, activities, etc. that developers can sometimes get away with not including in primarily player-versus-player driven environments focusing on combat.

Even so, if there is ever to be an offline/solo game mode that is identical to the main game, only minus other players, then it will be amazing (for those of us not able to connect or simply desiring a solo experience).

@ Aussie_Outlaw : I understand and share your point of view. But just for clarification, the only solo mode that's expected is an online PVE server (identical to the PVP servers but without human opponents)

This game won't sell much if it was single player anyways, it's made for multiplayer -_-

I mean I do respect all of your opinions regarding single-player but this is a rare game, a nautical game in the 21st century and playing with other players around the world makes it more exciting. Restricting it to a single player game will most certainly disappoint me because why would I play a game like this when the end result is just a finite generic result? "You have finished the game, congratulations!" I spent 42 hours on this game, wow.

Nope, definitely not. I want to have an infinite kind of end game, even if there's one, since this is almost like an MMO. What keeps MMO strong is its length and my $40 will be well-spent in that case.

So please Game-Labs, try not to listen to them. However, I completely agree with the single-player TUTORIAL scenario for basic things such as sailing and such, that I will definitely go for but for this game to turn into a single player? Hell no (sorry I'm from cali hahahaha)

Restricting it to a single player game  (...)

Don't be scared, my boy. Luckily all this isn't about restricting NA to SP. It's just a thread about the idea of a solo mode option. :)

Some are quite impressionnable  :D.

By the way, MMO and SP games have particular strengths and weaknesses. That's why it could be great to have both features in NA...

If they can somehow make both viable then that would be great but as bias as I am, I hope they put more emphasis on the MMO portion because that's where the real deal is; game economy, politics, guilds, and such.

I'm not currently a test player, but created this account just to voice support for the project and hope for a non-MMO version to purchase. This game looks like a fantastic idea and reading the community forum gives the impression of great active development. I'll be excited to see what it looks like once it reaches a wider pre-release!

Please don't lose sight of a single-player or private, closed server game option! I definitely wouldn't want to play in a world open to the general internet population, in part because of a severe dislike of PVP, and in part because I prefer to play with a small group of invited friends instead of a larger, unfiltered group. An online-only, MMO-style game is one I wouldn't buy and play.

Best of luck with continued development! I hope to see a PVE-focused game to buy in the months or years it takes to get to that point.

I subscribe to this, entirely. Single-player is a must for any good computer game.

I don't know if this is the case or not with Naval Action, but as a general philosophy, the computer games should never rise some people against the other (by let the ships of two players confronting, for example), but make them work in a team (when they select the multiplayer playing option). Sure, some may be of a different opinion, but I think this would be the correct sense of Multiplayer aspect of any computer game.

I would quickly grow weary of single player mode. It would be a shame to spend resources on such a project. Instead I would suggest enlarging the map to achieve regions with low population thereby allowing single player folks an opportunity to spend most of their time in that mode.

Not in a pvp mmo, which is what Naval Action is.  By your philosophy, there should be no such thing as pvp and it should all be pve, players vs ai.  That is boring and dull and ai often do stupid things.

A PvE server would fill the need for SP play. It would also give a place to learn the key commands by reflex instead of hunting for them in them as a frigatte bears down on you as you try to edge as close to the wind as you can to get that little bit of extra speed you need to get away. After that, except for a quite sail on a Sunday afternoon, I'm not sure I see the need for SP with this one.
