Hello, I have a related question, on the greenlight page you list "coop" as a feature, I'm wondering if by coop you mean, cooperating against other players or if you mean players vs AI? I want to support this game and as soon as it becomes available for purchase I will do so with my dollar, but my only hope is that there will be a player vs ai option at least somewhat early in release, is this the case or will it only be PVP for a long period of time?

NPC ships will be in the game. We already have some basic bots that will be eventually improved to provide a challenge to a player. PvP will not be forced upon a player in the open world

Pity, so piracy would be very limited? How u wanna merge piracy with open world if u dosent force player to go into pvp zones?

I think there could be two options. One simple open world, where player join and sail (makeing quests, trade, fight npc and with pvp zones where u can earn more money then in no-pvp zones. Other u can have shard like server system where ppl join server on desired rules, but if u wanna quick earn money / ranks do more challagaing zones then u need to join server with pvp rules on.

And please not single player in this game..., maybe as tutorial.

Current plan is to have one super server.

piracy will be extremely hard or almost impossible in protected national waters.

ie. English channel is protected, however the Caribbean is not? 60 Miles out from Port Royal and it's anybody's game, while Portsmouth to Le' Havre is completely safe?

Well, in 1720 it would have been anyone's game, because the naval presence was so anemic. The Caribbean was the real Wild West, where there was no law. The Channel would be suicidal for a pirate because a single attack would make huge headlines and then every ship in the busy waters would report you.

i dont understand the need of pvp zones there will be knots where trading routs will conect and will be rich with plenty of booty where alot of players will be and who controls the area wins automaticly. like St Johns was the final stop before the main voyage over the atlantik to west afrika or spain.

i kinda think the ones who demand them are just to lazy to sail around in an Age of Sail game to get action.

Excellent news, thank you for the reply!

Related question: it is still not quite clear to me wether there will be separate navigation and battle maps (like in PotBS) or just one big world map. In other words: is it defined who is participating in a specific battle, or is everyone simply continuously part of one huge 'battle'? I would strongly prefer the latter, but I'm not sure if that is feasible for and MMO.

Yes, this is still unclear, but i think there be some kind of global map...(guess)

Good. I approve of this fully. It provides players with a good balance, without making pvp impossibly difficult for those of us who want a good scrap.

The problem I'm having is in understanding how this is supposed to work in an open world, so some questions if you don't mind...

1. Will I be able to say amass a small fleet of AI and go against other AI fleets without interference from other players?

2. Will PVE be basically an unrewarding "side" task, like the bot matches in a game like DOTA2 or League of Legends where they give very little or no experience or money?

3. What exactly do you mean that PVP won't be forced on the player, what will there be for me to do in the open world that doesn't mean interacting with other players?

let me try from what i read and think so far.

1.

can happen maybe as event they recreat trafalgar that would look epic. or like in blackflag where british and spanish are fighting each other. that all depens wich nation is with wich in war.

or some pirates in bermuda sloop hunting some small coast merchants the posabilitys(spelling?) are endless.

2.

it all depens how you look at it PvE i.e. you are with your friends atacking a spanish fleet that is heading for St.johns from Panama with Philipien Silver and amulets this money is needed by the spanish nation for upkeeping the navy and to buy goods do maintan and upgrade forts, ships, towns and much more. if nation is at war wich is PvP, suddenly this PvE battle is in the big picture an PvP encounter between 2 player Nations.

3. no PvP zones they are imo not needed the trading routs will be like back then in the days florida- cuba or between cuba and haiti

just a small sketch what i mean pvp zones will come by itself be it resources like lignum viteo or other stuff

well if you talk about how bots can encounter each other yes maybe but not at the moment they only have basic bots at the moment from what they wrote

Well I would really just like to know what the devs have in mind on how to handle things like this, will it essentially be like EVE for example, where there are protected sectors where killing a player is suicide and there are lawless sectors where you can fight and kill and pirate all you'd like without consequence.

Or will it perhaps by like a typical mmo where I can flag myself for PVE only or something.

Then also it's just how are bots going to be worked into the game, will they be just as rewarding to fight as players etc.

I don't know much about the history of sailing combat so some of your examples Mirones flew right over my head :)

Also are there signups for closed beta testing, I noticed quite a few people with the tester label around.

Multiplayer presents a number of problems for me in any game, it oft means that I will be outclassed by everyone I face because I don't have the time or focus to practice and learn the game the way they have, I can't save my game and leave and pick it up later in multiplayer, in sim games especially you often have to roll with a group in a clan or squad otherwise you get jumped and destroyed by other clans and squads and in my experience this just adds hassle to the game that I don't like dealing with. But ultimately I like to be the harbinger of my own experience and multiplayer is a case where I play in a world made by all the other people in the game and that just isn't what I play games for.

learning by doing you dont want to know how bad i was when i started Flight simulators and now after practis i got better same will happen in NA

Hehe, well there's really no persuading me, I give multiplayer games a chance all the time but my interest in them always wanes after only a few days unlike single player games. But like I said it's mainly that I like games to be under my control to at least some extent and multiplayer experiences don't allow for that.

Hopefully the PvE content will be realistic and challenging, not throwaway nonsense like in PotBS. I am particularly hopeful that it might provide plenty of opportunity for meaningful smaller ship actions, e.g. raiding coastal shipping, practicing gunnery against small forts, etc, even if fleet actions and East India convoys remain the purview of PvP play.

I would only be interested in single play, I realize many people enjoy multi.but it is not for me.

i only or mostly care aboutr mp because i just dont want to be alone all the time. but some coop missions would be a welcome change

We loved that game (i personally spent 3 years in it from beta till 2010).

If I can name one problem in Potbs - it is overdesign. There were too much useless stuff in the game. Ships having no purpose in combat (Capri MC vs Oliphant), upgrades or items that were never used and many other things.

Economy was very interesting in the beginning, but at the endgame it became a bit boring.

i totally agree, the economic stuff is intresting if made right. alot of overdesign as you say with alot of useless stuff that just where there. what i like in potBS is that there are alot of ships. the downside is the level system where all ships under level 50 is pretty much useless. and there was no real corvettes! like the ones in the Hornblower series, corvettes like small frigates. in potBS they where all frigates, and some tiny corvettes by the size of a sloop.

i love corvettes and those smaller warships <3
