I suggest that cannons get extra slots in the ship hold screen and that we are allowed to dump them while we are at sea.

Edit:

The cannon ship slots are still there but when cannons get equiped they show up in the hold as well but these are grey instead of the white. (white =trading stuff)

When at sea it is possible to rightclick on the grey cannons and to choose "destroy". everything is similar to destroying cargo at sea

The idea behind this is to get a litte speedboost which may could make a difference. I already do that to catch faster vessels or to get away by destroying my repair kits.

@z4ys

Brilliant idea, suggested something similar a while back. Let’s get right too it then. Why you want to dump your cannons? Well because you are running away and want to lighten the load perhaps?

Looking on the bookshelf and google we hit a small snag. You can only dump the TOP deck cannons plus Bow and Stern chasers. At sea, lower decks no way this would happen. Can’t go through the port holes. Instead of “SLOTS” have a simple one time EJECT button that discharges Bow Top and Stern cannons.

So, imagine this…

BATTLE instance I’m in an Indefatigable LO/WO being chased by pirates my max speed at the optimal offset with the wind is 10.67. here is my load out

2x           FRONT                  6-9-L

2x           BACK                     6-9-M

18x         Top Deck             5-12-L

26x         Lower Deck         3-24-M

Ejecting the top 3 areas leaving just the 3rd class 24pound Mediums increases my speed to 10.78. Might be just enough to get away to OW.

OPEN WORLD Instance

Roughly BATTLE is 5x while OW is 20x REAL WORLD time speed. However, the recent change by the Dev’s with the OW speed model probably would show or registered no effect. At 20x it does dilute the 0.11 knot gain (not percentage but actual). Probably not worth the eject option in OW then?

This was just my thoughts, but would also like SHIP to SHIP transfer of goods…

Norfolk.

They could also eject the lower decks, but with a much slower process requiring moving and lifting each one through the cargo hatch.

This could be a neat feature if implemented right - for example, topdeck could be instantly ejectable, but the bottom would take X seconds and may not work during a storm.

Weather deck, maybe. Takes time. Instances of 2 or 4 guns being dumped from the castles are not uncommon. Full gun decks is a harsh one to pull out.

Roll out the carriages... unplug all fittings,... damn, the barrel and supports do even pass entirely through the gun ports !?...how do you dump gun decks below ?

Above castles might work, blessed gravity.

No way would you get a gun through he gun port.

Once most of the guns weight was on the outside of the hull it would tilt downwards and jam itself tighter than a tick. ;)

you asked for it... SEAMANSHIP in the Age of Sail John Harland (15th edition)

CH4 Theoretical Principles Page 47 very last paragraph.

Gold star @The Red Duke

Now go grab a calculator after reading pg47 and workout "ROLL Displacement" moving My lower deck. 2x Cannon Opposites on a normal roll can oscillate the opposing cannons by 25% in weight. This is why it would be very hard if not impossible at sea. My Indef has 26x 24 pounders however heavy do you think that cannon is?

"In June 1796, Renommée patrolled the Caribbean off Porto Rico. On 12 June, she chased a strange ship, which she joined around 18:00. The ship hoisted two flags half-mast and fired a shot, to which Renommée responded by flying her colours. Immediately, the ship hoisted the Union Jack and gave chase.[4]

Captain Pitot attempted to escape by throwing his anchors and some of his guns overboard, but the ship gained on Renommée. On 13 June, at around 4a.m., the British ship, identified as the 74-gun HMS Alfred, under captain Thomas Drury,[3] fired a broadside that struck Renommée under the waterline, causing a leak that wet her ammunition. After a second broadside from Alfred, Pitot struck his colours."

Throwing cannons overboard happened in real life.

Not disputing that at all.

Onésime-Joachim Troude  quote you use states "his anchors and SOME of his guns..."

The Galathee class frigate

French load out is not clear 32 guns upgraded to 44. This is my guess and no data just the GB load out. Lower deck was 32x 12pds and the remainder 12 cannons... 10x on a quarter deck (possibly 32pd Carros) leaving 2x 9pd on the Forecastle.

Pie in the sky guess... and SOME of his guns going overboard ... 10x Carros and the 2x 9pds ?

No. If anyone cared to investigate the subject the main guns on a ship weighed so much that you would need some sort of lifting device and a calm sea.. In the case of the renomme it was most likely the chasers and smaller firearms. To suggest that it was possible to lift 8pd cannons from the main gundeck and throw them overboard is simply to disregard the laws of physics and the limitation of the human body.

Yup..right there with the stupidity of being able to dump cargo while moving in any amount of time.... Unless it is paper work or very small amounts of coin and jewels.. You need to rig pulley and crane which means sails are down and furled
