Mrdoomed Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 Getting guns is an adventure to say the least and i could see it frustrating some players but im curious if you can use smaller guns than recommended. I thought you could use small guns but i tried equiping the basic 4lbs on a suprise and it wouldn't let me. Can this not be done and if not why? For what i do small guns are adequate for now but it seems i cant use smaller cheaper guns. What am i missing?
Sir Texas Sir Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 (edited) Like HODO said you can't use the Basic Cutter Basic guns cause they are rank 10 and it's the only ship that can use them. Though Yah you can down grade guns. I run all 6 lbrs on my Teak Teak Renom which is 15 speed without cannons and 14.54 with repairs. Once I put copper plating (if I can get it to drop) or equal speed mod on her she will be 15 with repairs. Part of how I do this is the runing all 6 lbrs. It's mean to tag and run your sails down so others can catch up or just run the traders down. Oh and if you need cannons can make them for you. Though irons a pain right now cause I'm broke.....for a certain reason. I would need iron before i can make them at discount. Edited June 5, 2017 by Sir Texas Sir
Mrdoomed Posted June 5, 2017 Author Posted June 5, 2017 Ok thanks, didnt know the basic guns was for cutter only.
Slamz Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 You can see the slot requirements for each gun deck. It may say something like: [7-9]/[5-9] This is saying you can use class 7 through 9 cannons or class 5 through 9 carronades. The "basic" guns are class 10 which only the Basic Cutter can use. Arguments can be made that weaker guns require less crew to man and don't slow down your ship as much, at the obvious expense of less penetration. (I'd have to look at the numbers again but if I recall correctly, smaller cannons also do more raw DPS, which means they are better if you are guaranteed of getting penetration, e.g. against lighter ships at shorter ranges. But 6 pound cannon balls will bounce all day off of the sides of a Live Oak / White Oak Indefatigable so your DPS there is basically zero. Just something to consider.)

Pre wipe i play as a traditional pirate and only hit trade ships or easy targets for quick gain so 6lbs or even 4lbs are enough to rip sails and knock down the stern of a trade ship. Post wipe im not sure if its going to even be worth playing ( as in not fun) the way I used to play. Im very casual in my play and just like to log on for a hour or so and look for some pvp. So far ive grinded for two days in the attempt to just get a snow/suprise and put guns and crew on it. If once i get a bit bigger ship and start pvp again im instantly killed by a dumb ass teleporting revenge fleet i wont be playing long so none of this will matter ha ha ha. Guess ill find out soon enough .

Thats the plan. I made a nice living off it before so ill see if I can do it again. Plus depends on how much certain game mechanics are abused and how it effects me.
