With all the changes coming, I thought I would ask for one that shouldn't be difficult to implement as it has been in the game before. BIG WAVES. Plain and simple, it would be fun. Of course, not in all battles, not even in most. However, when its raining and storming in OW, I'd like to see some of the storm battles be BIG WAVE battles. Perhaps 20% of the raining battles be heavy seas - and perhaps, 5% of the good weather battles be high seas. It would add to the fun and also the challenge of combat. I really think most all of the players would like to have it put back in.

YES PLEASE!!!!!!

I have seen storm battles in old videos and I REALLY want to experience* them. Give me storm battles please! Rough weather that makes captains sail at battle sails if they want to have a chance at a stable broadside platform.

However, I would suggest that in every heavy storm you see on OW, the waves will be very large in battle. And for every light storm you see in OW, the waves will be larger than normal in battle.

It would be great if the waves are high enough in heavy storms to make the bottom decks of SOL's (especially second and first rates) almost unusable (you can still shoot them but they'll most likely just land in the water unless your enemy has locked yardarms with you). This would give smaller ships like fourth rates and third rates a chance to engage a much superior fleet: I can see the smaller fleet running toward an approaching storm on the horizon, upon reaching it, they surprise the chasing enemy by turning to fight.

*Oh and I would happily sacrifice my precious time to test a Santa Cecilia in a storm battle, since that has not been done yet to my knowledge. You know...what for the sake of testing and all that (shameless begging, I know...I'm sorry #notsorry).

THey had it, but I think there was some issues with it or something.  I would love to just see storms in OW again.  Had some crazy scary moments in storms before in the past.

As i recall, the storm waves were too much of a drain on the servers in keeping track of the extreme movements and swaying of the vessels. I'm not a dev of course, but that does make sense.

Completely agree. My question is, why did they removed the already working storms? Has it something to do with more confortable testing to then take them back into final version?

Unity has a limit on the number of instances that can be running at once, or something. But I would be surprised if the devs couldn't find a workaround, were the community to motivate them by speaking out in favor of storms.

Yah that is why I said I would be just happy to see some of the OW storms return if anything.  If it's to much to do them for battles, that would be nice to see them in open world. Any one notice there has been a bit rougher seas in some battles and even rain?  I think they might be slightly getting a little work around it.

Oh god, those storm videos from back in the day like this one from deathstimulator! Please give us storms!

I got a feeling we might see the waves like this, but the first week or so we will be seeing port battles with a big mix of fleets....maybe that little privateer might save the day for the team lol

Was fun to watch them fight.

I had thought it wasn't because of Unity but because players were split.  Half loved the challenge and half thought it was tedious to aim and unfun.

Like pretty much ever issue it seems...

I'm all for including the map.  Bonus if it's tied to OS weather.

big waves were only possible in the standardized instance that was separate from everything = from the lobby. That instance was fixed - set in stone, because it did not need to change night and day and weather.

If we change night and day and weather - we cannot change geometry of waves on the go.
Because of that heavy waves storms are impossible in the current generation of water and weather and night and day cycle.

thats a pitty

another thing is that they were awesome 1-2 times for many players. The participation rates was extremely low. Most players who encountered a storm battle just exited the battle leaving their ship stationary.

So have storm instances where the day/night cycle doesn't change. How is this a problem?

Nights in the OW are not dark, and OW storms are dark regardless of time. Only a few pedants will even notice.

No one asked for the sun moving (way too fast) in battle instances, but everyone wants storms. Reviewers will love storms. The game needs more varied material for trailers and the game needs content.

Is the day/night cycle the only obstacle?

Captains and their crews would be more focused in keeping the ships afloat than blazing guns at each other. That's how realistic it goes.

Indy vs. Droits d'Homme, Battle of Quiberon (two French 74s foundered by opening gunports), etc.

The game's storm instances are not particularly threatening conditions.

I did not know. It's both amusing and worrying.

I remember I farmed an afk santi when I was starting out in a Cutter. I simply thought I was lucky to turbo-charge an already quick grind.

Does this statistic include both PVE and PVP battles? I can understand why PVE grinders clicked out. Farming without big waves was more time effective and less demanding on actual gunnery skill. Same story with PVP, actually. Oh, dear... Exactly what you would expect from auto-skipper santi drivers.

People clicked out of the storm battles because 25% of battles were storms for months on end. Everyone got sick of being force-fed storms.

This was Sea Trials where people expected a balanced battle line fleet engagement. PvP'ers were frustrated that they could not find their enemies, and people were bad at shooting, resulting in dismasting and ramming.

BUT...

In the OW storm battles would be fought only by choice, or in a sudden panic when two ships blunder onto each other in the fog. We all play this game and know how rare OW storms are. It would be an infrequent, dramatic occasion. You wouldn't have the storms ruining fleet battles all the time.

This should be a non-issue.

1 waves are on the server to avoid cheats
2 waves shape cannot change real time

In my opinion, should be present some storms. But not too many. They would give some variety to the OW, some realism and a chance to escape to some traders or warships in numeric inferiority. The amount of storms is very important and should not be too much; otherwise it risks being unplayable or boring (players who stop the ship in battle waiting to just exit then). Storm / big waves should be a fairly rare event.

Taking for example the world of air sim, the clouds (something that remembers the storms) can for up to help the fun and gaming feelings. But they have to be few. Too many clouds make the map unplayable, and no one has fun.

So the solution is put in the right amount of storms / big waves. Obviously if there are no server/game technical problems in doing so.

Regarding alternation day/night. In my opinion, the night is currently uselessly short in the game. It's a useless artifact, as it is perfectly possible to hunt in the dark (fortunately not so dark) of the night. Moreover, the lanterns of the ships are perfectly visible from a distance.
So I would prefer to have in game the correct duration of the night.

So as I understand it Admin....Big Wave Storms are a complete impossibility now. Is that correct?

At first it was alot of fun, but at for some reason 2/3 battles ended up being storm battles. Thats when people started leaving the battle as far as i recall.

Why do the waves need to change shape in real time?

If you tag someone in an OW storm zone, can't the server just plop you down in a storm instance? Maybe when the battle is over, the storm on the OW has passed. Doesn't matter; that's time compression.

I'm in agreement that if you can create a stormy grey sky, raining, wavy map with no day/night cycle where no sun is visible, the differences will not be widely noticed by the general public.

Personally, now that we have OW and time compression, it'll add a much interesting dynamic and skill level to any engagement.
