Leveling up Officers/Generals

What is the most efficient way to level up my Officers & Generals?  Is there some kind of formula that would expedite the promotion process? As of now, I have a three star brigade commanded by a Brig General.  I always use the three star brigade in heavy combat around the VPs - but other officers around him are getting promoted faster...

I try to give as many of my units equal gameplay where possible. They can't gain experience NOT seeing combat.

The details require a bit of in-depth knowledge of the underneath mechanics, but the short answer to this is that all officers present on the battlefield will gain experience, whether or not they actually shoot anything or not.

The ones that DO shoot something tend to get more experience than the ones that sit out back and drink a few beers while everyone else is getting shot up front.
