Finding some pretty interesting posts in the other language sections. Maybe this has already been seen but it was new to me. From an older (June) post in the French forums showing some awesome NA rough seas sailing. No idea why they'd work on snow storms in the Caribbean.

It is a video from the "Storm" map in Sea Trials. The ship is the "Snow" resulting in the "Snow Storm" title :P

Yeah, it's absolutely tragic they never implemented rough seas in open world. Yet another failing of the dev's to think outside the echo chamber of the old vets and get creative with implementing some of the amazing things they've come up with in creative ways. :(

I agree. Stormy weather is a reality of the ocean, and high-running seas would add an amazing tactical consideration into the game (I'm imagining ships of the line unable to open their lower gunports due to the swells, like Droits de l'Homme vs. Indefatigable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_of_13_January_1797 ).

Let's get the basic game out the door first... but if 6 months after release they wanted to offer to add this capability as a kickstarter funded enhancement - *that* would get my support in a heartbeat.

Looks incredible, feeling envious of those who got to experience it firsthand. Now all it needs is a chance that if you raise too many sails a strong gust and bad positioning might rip them apart.

To be fair to the devs, it looked good and the wave mechanic worked great, but it got old sailing in storm battles in Sea Trials very quickly.
People tended to log off when they came up because they were not as fun to play as you might think so I get why bringing them back isn't a big priority.

That said, it would be nice to see them back at some point, including more penalties for lower gun ports, which were represented in the original but didn't constrict SoLs a lot.

Yeah, go and stick it up your 'echo chamber.'

Most old vets have spent years asking what happened to the storm battles in the OW.

It was not bad pvp. But when you think at war thunder there is a alpin aviation map I really hate that map I leave that map everytime I am forced to play there.

Same with the storm map. Aming was challenging so most people left at the start while they were looking for the easy kill. And while some player left the balancing was screwed up. So more player left the instance. Let's call it snowball effect. In the end people complained that it wasn't possible to get got fights there so it was dropped. Even the fight were awesome when the battle was balanced.

I swear, you are the most crotchety old fart! The explanation I received long ago was that storm battles were argued by the hardcore Sea Trials crowd to be "bad PvP,"  and so it was abandoned. Is this false?

People got sick of storm battles in Sea Trials when they made up a huge percentage of all battle instances, which is very different from the occasional, situational storms in the OW. There's a reason your average seafaring narrative contains only one big storm, rather than a constant grind of bad weather. Many players weren't very good at aiming in storms, and ended up ramming or dismasting to excess.

But the devs have pointed to some sort of OW instance limitation, and usually ignore inquiries of what happened to the storms.

Geez it's hard to find stuff in the forums. Now I'm remembering reading something about admin saying the battle instance storms got dropped because of issues keeping the server and client data sync'd while fighting. The actual waves had to be tracked at both ends.

They couldn't do it in the OW now or our ships would be skipping off every second wave crest.
