Is there any way to obtain the game as single player, or at least use it single player once purchased? Any workaround?

The game relies on online connection to Steam.

For single-player experience without any hostile behaviour between players there is the PvE server. You sail at at heart desire and have to face only environment AI.

but of course there were plans for a single player as a separate game or a separate purchase of the personal server. Both in the very distant future

With the graphics and game mechanics you guys have, you could make a prety epic single player game.

It's is a pretty epic single player game. Go on the PvE forum. You cannot be attacked by, nor can you attack human players. It's all you vs the AI when and where you want. You don't even have to talk to anyone.
