Targeting mechanic

Really having a tough time with targeting.   Often when I right click the unit I wish to attack, the movement order is placed instead.   Is there a key command that I am missing to get units to target, and fire upon the closest enemy unit, or a specific enemy unit you wish to target?   Getting really frustrated having to click several times before the correct orders are issued.

Yep, I experience this as well.  Too many times lately, my artillery has limbered up and rode merrily into the waiting guns of enemy infantry only to be totally wiped out because the click for target acquisition didn't take and acted like a move location command.   I've also lost brigades to this as well.

Apparently the aperture for selecting is too small?

I usually click right below the unit icon to prevent this.

I've had to revert to clicking on the icon to bypass movement order. I think this has crept in with latest patch, apparently.
