Or where to put your machine gun nests and poured pill boxes after playing too much WWII. Which buildings have the best site lines? Is there a church tower nearby? Oh look, a heavy stone wall hidden by a dense hedge. That could come in handy. Some things never change.

It's really interesting to see how far you can actaully see from "the high ground" in real life. Viewing a game from the top down makes it difficult to understand how important having the elevation is, but at three hundred feet the horizon becomes twenty one miles away!

Some time ago I went to the top of a hill with my friends. From there you could see the second largest power station in the whole of Europe, big exhaust stacks piling smoke into the wind. It was great ground.
