why not?

Free2play is always tied to a completely different mentality. To make any money they would have to lock content and make progression grindy to an extreme point so people pay to unlock the regular stuff faster. That is never good and leads to way too much frustration. It also opens the game to the toxic masses (I am not saying we are perfect but have you ever seen war thudner chat...) which wouldn't help either.

i ve played war thunder since 2012, i play f2p and p2p since i have memory. trust me when i say that a game like this NEED more people and this is only obtainable trough f2p or massive discount on price and in both cases they need more advertising. look at league of legends: no progression, no pay to win, only estetics premium content; the most played mmo game ever. so why not put some paints or skins and make this game free . i will be the first to help developer buying some cool stuff like a cool paint for my ship or my personal flag with my clan symbol. they need it, we need it.

lol, 64 posts in this topic and 32 "this will fix the game" opinions, all going in different directions

Not exactly. Most agree about PB fix, hostility fix, PvP fix (fleets, forts) and some more. They mostly disagree about priority, or what comes next.

Everyone agrees they want to have battles more often and easier.

The community was never so single-minded, probably because it's now that we're going extinct if nothing happens :)

The only way to fix the game, is to do exactly wot Pagan Pete says, exactly when he says it. No sudden moves... and everyone keep their hands where I can see them… Got it?

Now, the aforementioned post made an interesting mental impact on you. didn't it? Why? Because it was role-played. You could feel Pagan Pete in that post!

Naval Action was at its best when it was striving for Naval realism. Naval Immersion. And then the disastrous Perk-patch came out and you can see on the Steam tracker that that is where a huge dip tok place… and then continued down.

Naval Action needs to get back to its root! F-ing Epic PVP fights with realism in them! The ocean was a BIG place! And battles between two ships were often over before anyone ever knew they took place. Just your ship, your wind knowledge, and your gunnery skills!
Everything else is just cosmetic, or worse… Destructive.

  • No player-AI fleets.
  • No physics defying mechanics
  • Get rid of the crossed sword so Revenge Gankers actually have to hunt for the fight without visual cues.
  • Temporarily disable ALL perks, until they can be reworked realisticly so that the dev team can...

Focus on;

  • ship combat mechanics
  • Historically believable port battle mechanics with; land / fort / team-order's mechanics.
  • Have fair and realistic battle tagging mechanic!

Naval action is combat!

Naval Action is Historical Brand (™) small-ship piracy!

Naval Action is Epic flotilla battles!

Say "Aye!" If ye agree! [_]P

I am Pagan Pete, and if I am hired by Game labs, I will make naval Action Great Again!

Its really simple guys, the player base that remained after the initial fall relied on a flag system where a group of players would pull a flag and say "we are coming here now!  come challenge us", well that is gone with the new hostility system, and I posted in the suggestions a way to fix it, a hybrid flag hostility system where you could blockade a port and generate hostility while also letting the enemy know where you will be.  Bring Back player triggered pvp events!

PvP events needs to be a player triggered events with real consequences if the enemy does not respond to the challenge.  The flag system for port battles was not perfect, but it kept people engaged and it kept people playing for those epic player generated pvp events.  Having 3 or 5 pvp hot spots given at x location at x time the way the developers are trying to do this now is not good enough.   Why?  Because I and many others like me simply dont have an outpost near where these events spawn, nor do I care enough to venture out there to participate in them and also, its not very interesting because the outcome of those events have no meaningful impact on the game.  Taking a port from the British or defending a port from the Pirates had real consequences in the game and we had a world that was constantly evolving making one nation stronger or weaker based on the outcome of these battles, and these battles were plentiful, now if there is 1 or 2 scheduled for a day we are lucky.  The great thing about the old flag system is not only did you have 25v25 in the actual port battle, but the old flag system generated pvp outside of the port battle as allies on both sides tried to do what they can to help their ally win.  Thus, you had tremendous amounts of pvp being generated from the simple pull of a flag.

Even on PvP2 with the old flag system, we were able to conjure up some good port battles, and there was fierce fighting every night, for months with flags being pulled everywhere.  Sure there were some empty port battles, and some where it was a small 5v5, but at least we had good PvP all over the map.  All you had to do was log in at prime time and the flags started getting pulled.

yeah so have I as a realistic/sim player - atgms had a similar effect on that games as did fine woods(at least in those modes). I've said this before - if the devs need more money they should orientate themselves on elite dangerous which only offers paints as a buyable and you can eb sure I would chuck some money their way. I am however afraid that your suggestion would eventually end up with the mechanic of war thudner where you can buy premium ships (santa cecilia would be an obvious candidate) or blueprints which will create massive problems ingame. Its not that I don't like free2play but I'd hate that mentality getting into Naval Action.

That being said I agree players are desperately needed. I wouldn't at all be surprised if this game shows up in steam's winter sale as the devs have to see the need for new players (sadly we will probably get more alts then actual players...).

LoL is not MMO. WT is not MMO. Dota2 is not MMO.

Damn NA is semi MMO as battles are 25 v 25 and massive is only OW but fights dont happen here but are instanced.

Games that you mentioned are multiplayer games. Not MASSIVE multiplayer online games.

NA doesnt need to go F2P yet. Thats last resort and it needs total rework of game to fit it.

NA need proper road map and devs actually knowing WHAT exactly they want to do with this game. I was looking on NA as something similar to eve-o in age of sails but not as hardcore as eve.

Yet latelty changes are moving more towards some kind of instanced playgrounds and totaly throwing OW aspect away.

Generaly devs are making basic mistakes. They prolly have no idea how to develop game from marketing side and pr side. I have no technician experience but from client/tester side of view this whole alpha is failure.

And when i read that devs write things like for example : you played 1000+h so you get your money worth back playing bla bla bla. Seriously? You guys want to create open world sandbox mmo! You know what it means? Because you sound and act like you dont. And such statements doesnt look you good in my eyes.

I wonder what example admins will have to backup their illogical answer this time. Maybe from some indie game this time? Or fps?

As the OP I would still be very interested in seeing a history of the server populations.  If anyone ever discovers a way to view that information please post a link here.  Or perhaps the developers will allow us to access that information.

Seem the comments in the thread have strayed a far a drift of the original questions.  Suppose that is the nature of online gamers.  Ask them if it is possible to use a joystick and the responses will be filled with opinions of how stupid and wonderful gamepads are and how the game should be released on console and that the whole company is about to go bankrupt and a dozen suggestions on what to do to to improve sales of the game.   ....  But no one really knows if a joystick can or cannot be used.

NA is a very popular game.   I would just like to see how many people are playing on each server.

COMPARISON of NAVAL ACTION to OTHER GAMES (That I have played)

Lol.  There are plenty of games which are also mixed or negative reviews. Don't compare NA to only the top sellers. I just bought a game on Steam, Sniper something don't remember the name, that was on sale for 59 cents. The recent reviews, mixed, the average reviews, mostly negative. For 63 cents after tax, I thought I would give it a try.

I don't play many games.  I posted them all. Wasn't trying to skew anything. (The first 2 reviews have almost the same sample size (about 3000).)

There was so much arguing in this thread about the population on the servers and how some people think that infers something negative about the game.  My point was that 78% or 81% or 93% or 91% or 97% positive is mostly good.  The vast majority of players like it.  This was my attempt to show NA in a good light and refocus that the intent of the thread was a request for population numbers not a judgement.

I was saying  "NA is a very popular game."

I was trying to show NA favorably. More than 3/4 of the people who reviewed NA recommended it.  I  think that is good for a game that has not been released and is unfinished.

The glass is not 1/4 empty .... it's mostly full.

Does anyone know where to find a history of the server populations?  Perhaps maximum per hour or even the peak number at any time during each day.

I can see one site that shows them as low.  But it would be helpful to see a record of the actual numbers of people on each server.  I've heard players say that the populations go up and down but I'm curious by how much.  I haven's seen the numbers higher than a few hundred in a while.  Right now there it appears that there is less than 200 players on all of the servers.

Hello, i'm the webmaster who did the codes, past year,  to display server status at http://naval-action.arcantia.net/server-status.php

I catch servers status via https://storage.googleapis.com/nacleanopenworldprodshards/

Here is PHP codes :

$explode1 = explode(";", $url1);
$server_status1 = $explode1[0];
$server_pop1 = $explode1[1];
if ($server_pop1 == "Low"){$color1 = "green";}
if ($server_pop1 == "Medium"){$color1 = "orange";}
if ($server_pop1 == "High"){$color1 = "red";}

To display results :

<table width="100%">

<tr>

<td><font color="<?php echo $color11;?>"><?php echo $server_status1;?></font></td>

<td><font color="<?php echo $color44;?>"><?php echo $server_status4;?></font></td>
<td><font color="<?php echo $color4;?>"><?php echo $server_pop4;?></font></td>

I did not found a good way to display numbers of players without using steam api.

cheers.

ahoy Macjimm,

Steam tracks these numbers 24/7 all the way back to the OW launch a year ago. (Just hover your mouse over the green line in the grid) Enjoy:

- (For the game as a whole. I haven't seen any individual server breakdown but it does have a handy game comparison feature.)

Thanks Vasco and Kilo,

Appreciate your effort. The steamcharts provide good information about the total populations on all of the servers.

 I've started to keep track of the server populations myself.  Not sure if there is a discrete way get input from other players.  If so I could add it to my records.
