Sir. Cunningham Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Was wondering why Game Labs doesn't start a kickstarter for this game, ala Star Citizen and set some additional funding goals? I'm sure it would raise more money than anyone would expect, and that would allow Game Labs to hire more people to work on the game, leading to more content and faster development time. Seems appropiate for a game aiming to be as big as Naval Action, as it could potentially by as big as Star Citizen with an open sandbox world with FPS & MMO elements etc. 1
RAMJB Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 There's no big name of the industry involved in the development. SC has had the backing it had because it has Chris Roberts as head of development and that guy is almost a legend. Elite:Dangerous which's the brainchild of David Braben (a true genius on top of another legend of gaming) has raised much less money. Still more than enough to deveop the game ofc, but that goes on to show that million-worth kickstarters are rare, and that even gathering moderate ammounts can be hard if no well known developer is sitting behind the wheel. Besides, when you've got a dozen thousand backers you somehow are asking for some long term problems, for it's literally impossible to keep the whole crowd happy. A percentage won't like the result, won't agree with the development decisions, and will regret putting the money on you. On moral grounds that's troublesome (you're taking money from people knowing a % will end up regretting their decision to back) and on practical terms it means you're going to have some persistent bitching on the forums for a while from people who think that by having put money on the kickstarter they're somehow entitled to decide how the game should be done.I think one of the major pitfalls of SC is exactly that. Too much money from too many backers. Even if 1% of those backers don't like the game and if only 1% of them are very vocal about it (and I'm giving extremely low percentages), that's going to mean an awful lot of very angry people shitting on the game in the future in very clear and loudspoken terms. Which is extremely disruptive in an online community. And I can see why if Game Labs already has a viable plan of development via normal preorders they don't want to put their head through a kickstarter. Kickstarters are nice if you don't have any other way to finance your project. But if you do, it's better not bothering with it.
VEYRON Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 thats not going to happen at star citizen,,becouse hes firm in his believes and already mapped out the game on paper how it going to be,your putting ur money into the project becouse u belive that he can pull off most of it,and there be no cryin afterwards, but theres nothing wrong with doin a little of that here. i belive theres a place in pre order where you can donate to the cause, the differance here over star citizen is that we havent been givin a map,we dont really know what the world is going to be,and neither do they as they have stated,,the one big problem is they better make it great regardless and stand firm in thier believes that they are doing the right thing becouse star citizen will be the game of the year and hard to beat,,this is a differant game but it can compete if they stay on a very high level, for what its worth and what ive seen these developers here ..are very capable of programing a super game for this scenerio, and if they do it right, will compete against the new generation of online games, they do need to follow chris roberts leadership..stand firm, make the call and live with it,,back your decision with cold hard facts and the whiner and cryers will shut up,iits nice for us to be allowed to suggest in this process,,but the fact is,,we all are not the developers,,we are not the programmers else we wud be doing it and its they at the end of the day that will decide if this game wins or fails,,they will have to live with the calls they make from here on in that decide this games fate..so i suggest to the developers,,build your world as you invisioned,,just do it,,we just play in it.,veyron

People bitch their lifes out in F2P games they don't pay a single cent for. When money has been given the bitching potential goes up exponentially. Also a road map can decide how a game will look in general terms but in many cases people get mad later on because "this" or "that" doesn't suit them and "its not what they paid for". It's just unavoidable. Chris Roberts and his team might produce the best game in freakin' history (remains to be seen if they do), they'd still have a legion of whiners and complainers. It's a law of gaming that you can't satisfize such a large customer base because they will have very widely different preferences that can't all be met in the same title. Some people -WILL- be dissapointed with the game. And out of that "some people" yet some of them will be of the "bitchy bitchy, whiny whiny" class, and act accordingly with the obvious repercussions for the community.

admin Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Kickstarter is available only for companies/projects located in: US \ Star Citizen has hyped themselves into such state that anything less than a miracle will be considered a failure. We plan to use crowdfunding for additional features that would never appear in game without such help. For example rare ship packs, or special features relating to a very narrow part of the community, or ship interiors. 5
Edward Vernon Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 I am a backer of Star Citizen. I trust and believe in Chris Roberts. I am prepared to see what he produces, because I think whatever he comes up with will be 20 times better than I can imagine. The point with NA however is well made. Once again, based on what little I have seen and heard so far, I trust this team to produce a great game, almost certainly not perfect, but that is where we can help...eventually.

Esp. if you could walk around the ship, or spend time in the cabin whilst on a journey - I'd definitely pay extra money for that, and three of my mates will too! As for Star Citizen, you're right that A LOT has come to be expected by now, but I'm confident Chris Roberts can pull it off. Only thing I'm worried about is the time it's going to take.

It would be great indeed, but ressources consuming. I would prefer them to work on the open world, other ships, etc... But may be one day, when NA will be a huge success.
PrezesOi Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Ship interiors? The decor of the captain's cabin? Avatar? Uniforms? Feathers in the cap? No offence, but such passion for Sims like aspect always amaze me. I look forward to fighting in formation. To see and hear sails. And guns. Lots of guns. Large guns. Huge guns. Guys, do you remember first time hearing huge guns broadside in Potbs? Orgasmatron My avatar can be represented by a few pixels that make up my nickname.
