I cant access it either! Releasing the patch doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with releasing the keys.... however I hope on this occasion I'm completely wrong.

All we know is that it should come out this weekend.

This 'should' be the Sea Trials patch where the pre-orders get invited. However, it's still testing to iron out any remaining bugs before actual release.

I purchased the game just yesterday and got my paypal confirmation email. Does this enable me to participate in the Sea Trial when they start, and if so what would I have to do? (i.e. where to download something that will be patched to enable the Sea Trials?   )

Yes, you'll get an email with a Steam Key you can use to access the game on Steam from what has been announced.
