In order to make crafting more fun and less labor-intensive, yet still relying on quality goods and making an attempt at keeping Exceptional ships....exceptional...I propose the following:

Woods:

  • Adjust Fine woods to accompany normal wood resource harvesting at an approximate 10% rate (can be randomized around that point). Compass woods should not replace the harvest of Fine woods, but should be a chance for that additional 5%.

Notes:

  • Completely get rid of crafting notes. They are now, with the current resource distribution, an unnecessary complicating factor and useless timesink for crafting hours. Existing crafting notes can be refunded for their coin and labor hour value in redeemables.
  • Instead, utilize the various coins directly in crafting in place of notes.
  • Upgrade modules would require 5, 15, 30, and 50 coins for Common, Fine, MC, and Excep, respectively.
  • Ships would require 25, 75, 150, and 250 coins, respectively.

Upgrades

  • Allow crafting of all modules.
  • Modules that require personell (e.g. Marines, Powder Monkeys) would require a certain base of Silver coins.
  • Modules that require specialized knowledge (e.g. handbooks) would require a certain base of Gold coins.

Thems muh thoughts, let me know what you think!

If the plan to make golden ships truly rare works, you won't see fine woods in any meaningful quantities on the open market. There might be some fine fir, oak and teak out there eventually, but the stuff players really want; live, cedar and mahogany not so much, if at all... ever.

Issue is that fine fir, oak, and teak are necessary regardless of ship material for speed, build strength, and stiffness builds, respectively. In the few ports that produce fine woods on their own, not as a part of crafting, most or all of these woods are highly contested by marketeers willing to pay exorbitant prices for them, often several times their market value.

I suppose the other option is to make other ports, maybe those that produce the base type of wood, also produce the fine wood at a reduced rate (say, 10%!).

Kinda like this, I been getting a lot of comp wood instead of the fine version for my Fir, Oak and Mahog farms.  I mean the whole point of putting them up was to get the fine off them as I have tons of Oak and FIr all ready.   I need to set up a teak one now too.
