I was browsing the tubes looking for anything related to the Niagara and stumbled upon this,I'm certain you hard core history buffs and the like have seen this but for those casual players who wonder into the guns of the Niagara and wonder how you ended up back in port minus a durability...yeah.

It's horrific. But surely in a couple of centuries of this, I assume they considered some ways to mitigate the splintering, by padding the sides with multiple layers of nets, or even piling some sandbags? I seem to recall having seen that but it was from a comic book.

I wouldn't think they used sand bags as the weight would make the ship both unbalanced while stacking them on deck causing the ship to become top heavy (guns on the deck were a problem in their own right). The waste of space to keep sand in the hold when food, water and munitions were more vital of a commodity to keep on board.

What you may have seen stacked were the hammocks as they were stored between the Nets above deck along the railing. These could easily be places for protection around the gun as added protection, and without upsetting the ballance of the ship.
