Hi folks,

my finger is poised over the buy button in Steam but something is holding me back.

How accessible is this game? There's no tutorial is that right?

I've not played a game like this for years, used to love Silent Service years ago LOL

If youre used to most wsad movement games and even slightly intelligent then figuring out the basics is pretty standard and easy.

To get good does take some time but there are tons of great guides/Wikipedia info and most players are helpful.

If you enjoy open world games this time period and dont have ADD and need instant gratification then i can recommend this game for you.

If you do buy it, my suggestion is checking out guides on the guides forum and some tutorial videos(shameless plug: click the image in my signature, some tutorials which are all encompassing there) since there is indeed no tutorial at the moment.

There is also a help chat, and tons of people who'll do some missions with you to get you started. There is also a PvE server, where you are in an open world with other players, but you can only fight AI (not eachother).

However you can do missions together against AI (so with a mate or someone else). Also you first ship is a free ship, you can get as much as you like for free, so you basicaly don't lose anything (or not much at least) when you lose your ship.

The XP you get for your rank and the XP you get from crafting will be the same on all servers, so you can level up on PvE and switch to PvP whenever you feel like you have the grips of the game and keep your rank.

Your assets (ships, gold, upgrades, other stuff you collected) are server specific, so if you move up to PvP you'll start out with nearly no gold (but if you ask someone for a free ship, i know for sure someone will give you one).

Also on PvP servers, the other players don't bother going for the low level players, out of respect for them being in a learning phase and also caus the fights and fair and not worth it.

I have 600+ hours in this game, and when I bought it I thought, well if its worth a couple of days of fun its OK. And now its has become a bit of an adiction.

Well worth it in my opinion.

I have been playing this game for two months now and I hadn't got a clue how everything worked. I managed to fathom out for myself about the Open World, setting up outposts and doing Mission Battles and Trading. I soon got help from the likes of the Spud & Bramborough about Crafting and producing my own goods and before I knew it, I was crafting my own materials and ships. It all seems a little complicated to fathom out at first, but with a little help from guys like I have mentioned, it's not long before you are ruling the waves, so to speak. If you just want the quiet life of playing alone like I prefer, them the PVE server is for you, but if you want to join in with other players and fight personal battles with the community, then your are better joining one of the PVP servers. I believe PVP1 is the most popular of the two, but PVE is what I prefer to be honest.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will enjoy NA, once you get into it. I have done pretty well so far and you can read about my progress in some of the post in the Help Please Topic & All Ports Visited Topic, just to give you some idea of what's possible on the PVE server and how to get rich quick!

Welcome Keasy.

Press that button. You won't regret ever and for good reason.

For one it is a highly flexible game where you may draw your own path, obviously with limitation and a "rulebook" but not tied to any conventions.

This means for every cruise there's a suited ship which might not be the biggest or might not be the fastest. On top of that a vibrant community that will surely help you with tons of advice that you might have to filter at times and learn with trial and error. What works for one player might be too uncomfortable to another and therefore there isn't one single way of doing combat or trade or acting shipwright.

It is the best game in decades. Every cruise has its own story. Has a nice curve of progression and learning the mechanics which, being still under development, are sweet to see evolving better and better.

In addition to the good advice above, hit YouTube.com and search for videos under "Naval Action" for a look at the visuals of sailing, maneuvering, fighting and some valuable guidance on crafting and trading.

I like Jeheil's videos, which include beginners guidance as well as the popular weekly feature "A Letter to the King" about the recent week's activities as various nationalities compete and battle for control of the ~200 ports in the map, which covers pretty much all of the Western Atlantic north of the north coast of South America and the entire Gulf of Mexico and the Carribean.

Here's a link to his first Naval Action video, in February of this year.  Since then he's published about one every week, with guides on sailing, crafting, trading, clans, port battles and a review of almost all the several dozen ships available in Naval Action:

Is actually not hard to "play". Move the ship right and left...use auto sail and raise sails and Lower sails. In battle, This button aims and this one fires. Sail to a port to get there, click "attack" to attack a ship, etc etc. you don't need a manual.

The hard part is learning how to fight...what type of maneuvers you should do based on your ship, his ship, the wind direction, etc. learning how to move crew around to optimize the efficiency of your ship and manual sailing to maximize maneuver and speed. But that will come and everything you need is in a you tube video. But just to play and have fun? Takes 30 minutes

The game doesn't really need much of a tutorial actually as far as the basics go, for the rest there are youtube videos and clans that will help you.

There are simply no other games like this one, grab it and join a clan.

Well, I reckon as I didn't hit the buy button that evening that I will now, based on the replies in this post.

Very encouraging to see such friendly feedback. Communities can make it break it when it comes to these games and so far I like what I see.

It's an online game...there's always going to be some irreducible element of trollage, epeen, and other such nonsense.  That doesn't reflect on Naval Action in particular...it's just a fact of life on the internet.

That said, the proportion of such silliness is far lower with NA than with any other MMO I've heavily played (WoW, WoT, WT, WoWS...(hmm, apparently I have a predilection for MMO's that begin with "W")).  It's a pretty good environment & community here.  I certainly hope it stays that way after alpha & release.

Also the beauty of this game is it gives you choices. If you want to just play solo against the AI you have the option of the PVE server. If you prefer multiplayer, where you can get more involved playing with other players, then the PVP servers are for you. To get yourself familiar with the game, you can try PVE first or jump straight in with PVP where you will get lota of help from more experienced players and maybe get involved with joining a clan, where you will get all the support you need. The choice is yours.

Personally, I prefer to play alone in PVE and quite a lot of people do. Some people play on two accounts, PVE and PVP, it is just left up to the individual as to what sort of game play they prefer.

There is no, one server is better than the other as far as I am concerned, it's a matter of choice. Enjoy that is the main concern.

Even with the shameless plug I would say the best thing for any player new or what ever is take a few hours and go have a nice little youtube search for things.  Try to find some newer videos as some of the game has changed since EA release.   I learned so much over the last few months from others video's....except the stupid depower button I some how didn't know until one day in battle i had to ask.  "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS DEPOWER YA'LL KEEP TALKING ABOUT."  Yah this was just a few months ago and how did I miss that key in the control option sections I thought I looked over well....lol yah we where all new once and still learning.

With that mention I would say it might be a good thing if the guys that make some of those great video's go back and maybe check to see if they need to be updated for the new guys.

better thing since BAcon

HOLD your horses man I wouldn't go to the point saying it's better than BACON.  lol

dont waste your money.

the current state of the game is failure.  i'd wait afew weeks.  this next patch might help it out a bit.

Given most positive - to buy - posts add some sort of explanation I would expect the same from a - no buy.

This is an excellent GAME! There are so many ways to play this game, please don't get stuck on a single point of view on how this game goes. You can play solo, you can assemble a group of friends to play together, you can join a clan if that is the style you enjoy.

You can fight AI, or live individuals. It is a Hugh world and much to explore, you can craft, trade or be a warrior. The choices are yours. There are three servers and all them have their own flavor of the game.

It is an endless experience.
