Lord Hood Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Out of those 59 I'm sure you have some British deserters, so do expect to have your ships stopped and your crews inspected! The Royal Navy needs her manpower back 2
Prater Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Over my dead body. If you want to end up at the bottom of the ocean, be my guest. 4
Lord Hood Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 I'm not inclined to lose to a Colonial! I shall retake Royal Navy crewmen. HMS Shannon overcame an American vessel, I don't see why other British Ships could not!! (I do very much look forward to the engagements win or lose) 3
Saintduiex Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 Ohhh... tea time must be over, getting a lil feisty under the wig I see... Yea, probably some deserters, perhaps some convicts, deadbeats, wharf rats... but they are OUR deserters (enticed them fair and square) and Wharf Rats. You want 'em? Come and get 'em over Praters dead body!! 2

Tom Pullings Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 Ur....ehm.....I believe "Shanghaied" is an American term from the Bay area deriving from the practice of...ah...ahem...."recruiting" sailors who'd had a few too many.... Just sayin'..... But, in general, yeah! Just you Brits try something!!
Charles Caldwell Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 You should watch out - if you get too close to an American ship full of free men - your OWN crew of shanghaied men might start jumping sides! Arhhhh the classic 'Land of the Free' retort and how we poor conscripted and pressed sailors propped up the Royal Navy!!! I recommend you read this for a comprehensive view of life of the average RN sailor. The press gang is generally regarded as the means by which the British navy solved the problem of recruiting enough seamen in the late eighteenth century. This book, however, based on extensive original research conducted primarily in a large number of ships' muster books, demonstrates that this view is false. Remember sir not everyone in the US were free men!!!
