Boarding fight question

Not sure what mechanic is occurring here: I board a ship. I may have 4o prep points or so...BUT, enough at any rate that all of my battle options are blue and available. "attack" requires 22 prep points. I can choose "attack" when the timer for the round just starts (or more than 15 seconds) but if I do, the AI simply chooses "defend".

BUT, if I try to wait until the end of the timer, let's say 4-5 seconds, and then click "attack" so the AI doesn't have time, sometimes I can't. At around 15 seconds or so, the "attack" option turns to grey. Sometimes a few seconds later, ALL choices except brace will turn grey

I don't understand how I can have more than the required prep points at the beginning of the round (and at the end) with "attack" available but halfway through the timer, I lose the ability to choose attack. I still have the prep points...am I missing something?

Board when you have 100%. If you choose atack in last seconds you need have 60.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying? You mean 100% preparation ? If so, I have....but after a long fight my I may have 35 prep points at the start of a round. Also at the start "attack" is blue and useable. If I wait for the timer to et to 3-5 seconds, "attack" grays out long before....about 30 seconds even though my prep points are way above the 20 required for attack

Why can I "attack" at the beginning of a round but not mid or end round. Problem is if I choose attack at the beginning, he chooses defend

I should add its not just attack that grays out, it just goes first, sometimes all options grey out when I have 30 or more prep points and the timer is ticking Down.

Other times though, I can wait until 3 seconds and select "attack". So do I need double the prep points if I wait for the lasts second ?

Because the longer you wait to pick an action, the more preparation points are required to select it. Attack, for example, requires 60 prep points to select at the last second.
