Whenever the little family of field mice come out, he swoops down and shreds the hell out of it....then just leaves it there until the next one...then does it again. Why? Well he's not hungry, he just does it to kill field mice

Stack with Lightweight ropes and blocks and you'll be underway sooner than not which is an edge on a tight spot. I was playing around with this on my new mortar brig i built so I can get moved and stopped faster and notice how much diffrent it was. I think I'm going to have to make a new tagger/trader hunter and use this instead to test something. I'm going to make a bet that a good Rattler/Rennon with this will be out and up to speed way faster and on ships than before. Maybe even with a Trinc. Cause the faster you get your sails up and going the faster you can fun them down in my book. That and as some one said if your going to battle sails and abck to avoid sail damage these might be usefull on a trader too for the same reason to get them sails up and going faster than others. That might be why my Trader Brig out runs most taggs cause I use Rigging on it instead of crew, build or planking.

It does work - it just gives quicker reaction times - and combined with Fir and Speed makes for a good combination when chasing down ships. Come out in OW with the Mortar Brig - I'll see if I can catch it....

So answers like "play on PvE" or "avoiding pvp guides shouldn't exist" are just silly. Great advice all, thanks. It seems like there is some advantage to build industry out of harm's way and ship it in to dangerous areas when needed with convoys, friends, or when server pop is scarce 2

Jean Ribault Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Of course you can max out the speed of your ships with build types, upgrades, and loss of cannons, but once you get to that point you have to implement strategy to get your edge over the raiders. Lots of great advice above, but one of the things I do in addition is to plan my port exit timing for good wind position, and then use that boring-but-predictable wind whirligig to keep my best speed through the whole trade route; that usually means plan a counterclockwise circuit seeing the ports that maximize my profit. I have found several routes that fit that bill, and use them well. Staying out of the shipping lanes can acount for probably 75% of your success though. Here's another one: travel in the storms. Slows you down, but in heavy storms you can't even be seen until someone is right up on you. If you're slightly out of the shipping lane you'll never get popped. 3

I was sailing once in a Traders Snow during the Dane takover of France on pvp2, and snuck openly past a Dane pvp fleet like this. Back in the days of humongous AI fleets. I was feeling quite smug till I got an in-game PM from one of them calling me cute. Felt like I had just escaped a prison gang-rape! But yeah, this saved me there and afterward 1 or 2 more times, good advice for a trader. 2

It was common practice in the Age of Sail for merchantmen to sail with friendly warships, if possible, when making a transit, and for warships to escort or protect important friendly shipping, if it was going their way. The friendly AI "Coast Guard" will be engaged on your side if a Player enemy targets you and the AI friendly warships are in the circle of engagement when targeted. Very useful to know. In fact, if memory serves, the U.S. Navy ... before entering World War II ... conducted "anti-submarine training" by sailing in anti-sub formation WITH BRITISH MERCHANTMEN while crossing the North Atlantic during the German blockade. The German Navy was not authorized to shoot at "neutral" US warships, but could not torpedo a Brit without the serious risk of hitting a U.S. Navy destroyer, which would then be authorized to return fire. Meanwhile, the British merchantmen and the USN destroyers got excellent practice in convoy and anti-sub warfare with real German subs following them, cursing (in German of course). ~ HK ~ Edited September 29, 2016 by HardyKnox 1
