Hello community,

here a few suggestions to appeal to the females of the player community (yes there are some! xD)

- integrate Custom-design-able (and female) captains (officers) which you can rename and actually can be seen (for example moving on the ship) while beeing on the sea.

- every clan could choose one emblem or logo out of a fixed collection (which is then unable for other clans) which is but on the sails of their ships.

Please no large helpings of anime style revisionist history where we get entire crews being amazonian scantily clad females. Is your steam character and officer name not a female name already? I don't think they are going to do officers walking the deck and if they did it would be fairly generic. In real life a female would be hiding and pretending to be male anyways.

Side note: I do know of 1 western female captain (temp I think after husband died) and a really famous chinese pirate captain... who was more like an faction leader than an actual active sailor iirc.

Except for a few occasions where the women were found out, yet allowed to continue serving in their prior position for some time.

There was even one ship of the line where a black woman was captain of the foretop for years, with everyone aware of her gender.

Don' t wanna sound chauvinistic, but don' t we have Royal Pink paint scheme already?

Well, avatar customization (and in fact an avatar) would surely be nice, but so far I cannot see any priorities for this. Although - to be able to change the name of my officer would be really appreciated!

I agree. But that makes 0.00000000000000000000000001 of captains over the ages. Not really representative.

Still I don't have a problem if people want to have avatars as in captains pictures or portraits. Just not actual 3D avatars on the bridge of in game ships I have to look at.

Also is there any evidence of it being considered bad luck to have a female on a ship? Seem to remember a lot of books and movies where this is the case.

Obviously far from a unanimous opinion, since officers and even seamen took their wives to sea quite often. As per usual, I suspect 19th Century shenanigans for this superstition.

Captains had considerable latitude in the running of their vessels . While many may have complained about the presence of women on board, female presence was considered virtually an unavoidable ... who would share both his hammock and his food and serve as her protector."

What are the (primary) sources for the Flora Burn and Rachel Wall?

A quick Google search makes the former look more like a Wikipedia hoax than a real person.

first thing we need to do is to update the texts that will be somewhat gender neutral :)

Also welcome to the community and hope you feel at home here.

There were about a half dozen female pirate captains between 1600-1899 that were recorded in history.

Anne Bonnie and Mary Read, even though they never commanded a ship they were famous female pirates.

Flora Burn, and Rachel Wall.

There are several others who's name escape me.

Grainne Mhaol (Grace O'Malley) as well, famous Irish female pirate captain.

Female captains were usually pirates at the time indeed since men were even more misogynistic than today, among other stupid reasons.

wikipedia list.

Considering that famous chinese pirate woman, i suppose you refer to madame ching, if have been unable to find any good book about her, but if anyone has any interest in piracy in the china sea this is another good book: Pirate King: Coxinga and the Fall of the Ming Dynasty

The lack of books on pirate women is actually annoying given that there is plenty of books about the men.

Since there where thousands of male pirates for each female that should really not be a surprise.

I would just like to see avatar pictures for everyone. Dont want avatar combat or anything unless its sprites with combat like the ships NOT avatar combat lik potbs or wow or anything, that is just the worst.

Anyway to be able to have a cutom made pic of yourself that others could see when you are talking in port or when your ships are close.

Correct. And the ones that did slip in were few and far between and usually not the captain apart from dressing as men.

For the purpose of the game though I am not averse to having a small percentage females so that the players can relate to the game.
