I think the game will be more dynamic and appealing if you let players chart their own courses. Alliance mechanics may be nice but their should be ways to break alliances, backstabbing, double-cross, or go rogue. Maybe a rep system for players and for nations with penalties for low rep.

I believe that's the purpose of pirates, dont like the ideas and beliefs of you nation ? Go pirate :) Though they do need and will get a rework to become actual pirates :)

We are not aware of historical examples of backstabbing in the Royal navy for example. Or maybe even other navies. 

Navies did not like people who did not obey national orders.

Its always amusing to me to see people try and instill 21st century values into games set in completely different times.  

 

The Admiralty and/or Secretary of the Navy does not approve.  ;-)

I'm not saying we should enable Clan-Clan fights within one Nation. That would become too messy for everybody. :)

But we need to be able to play out such a story.

I'm not seeing the section about Captain Ben Franklin, are you?

I'm trying to find Captain Maturin in the history books, but so far no luck.
